MANY RACES GENERATE MUCH EXCITEMENT
A make up race, a visiting touring group and our regular five feature events made for an exciting evening of racing.
First on the card was the 125 make-up feature from the June 28 rain-out.
Evan Krautwald and Brittany Whitesall had the 13 car field in tow as they took the green flag for their 25 lapper. Whitesall and Phil Durham took the lead right away. On lap 2, Durham’s #32 went lame and stopped turn 3. With a little push, Durham was running again but dropped out. It was then back to Whitesall and Krautwald leading the way. Shane Braxton joined the duo in third. Hannah Schrom banged the turn 4 wall on the tenth circuit bringing out another caution. On the restart, Whitesall stretched her lead as the field passed the crossed flags. Braxton, who seemed to struggle to hang in third for awhile, faded in the closing rounds to finish fourth. Whitesall’s machine was a dominant factor as she took the checker for the win.
The Young Guns 390 rolled onto track for their 20 lap feature. Only 6 cars made the trip to Airport this time. Steve Sacks and Dan Souder anchored the front row with Sacks jumping to a respectable lead. Souder wasted no time in closing the gap by lap 3. During the 5th circuit, Souder knocked one of the berm tire markers onto the track signaling a caution. As the restart got underway, Tanner Rumberg began to challenge Nathan Prazenica for second with Sacks still in the lead. As the group began looking at five-to-go, Rumberg’s machine called it quits in turn 2. At the checker, it was Sacks, Prazenica, Souder and Matt Campbell. The wingless four-strokers are fun to watch, but don’t seem to have the speed and quick response as even the 125 two-strokers. After taking the checker, winner Sacks sped off the track without accepting Victory Lane congrats and photos.
The regular Saturday night races now took center stage beginning with the 600’s. The night’s 600 feature was all Bill Thomas piloting the popular 7H Hunter Racing machine. The field toured the oval for 12 laps this night without a caution. Bob DeVault managed to hang tough in the second spot followed by Cameron Bellinger, neither able to make a challenge on the speedy Thomas. Jon Holmquist’s stop brought out the first yellow compressing the field for a restart. As laps wound down, Bryant Davis and Jim Tippin tangled in turn 1 turning on the yellow once again. The checker waved over Thomas for the win with DeVault still holding down the second spot and Bellinger coming across in third.
The 270 feature was peppered with numerous yellows from the start. Josh Martin and the tenacious Ken Andreas were one/two through most of the event. The “big one” came in turn 2 before even one lap was recorded on the board. Eleven of the 17 cars that started the event were involved. Most were able to continue with various damages. Some, however, retiring later being unable to continue. As the field took the white flag, it seemed as though Martin was going to beat the charging #90 of Andreas for the first time. As the duo came thru turn 4 headed for the checker, Martin for some reason, slid high allowing Andreas to slip under and roar home for a spectacular win. Some things just have to be called “head-shakers”.
Glenn Frye, Jr came home the victor of the 250cc Juniors. A flag-to-flag win over Kody Holand. Zoe Mattis was first under the checkered flag for the 125cc clan.
The second 125 feature had Corissa Matherly and Shane Braxton sharing the front row. A three car tangle in turn 4 on lap one between Lee Reinhardt, Zach Short and Hannah Schrom had Hannah laying her #08 on its side. Brittany Whitesall, fresh from her earlier win, began closing on Braxton. Braxton, however, kept a smooth pace hitting his marks every time. On lap 20, the pursuing Whitesall clipped a tire marker in turn 4 causing a loss of control and dropping her to third behind Evan Krautwald who was in control of second. Braxton held on for the win and unaware that Whitesall had dropped back to third at the line.
Wrapping up the night’s events were the 250 Stockers. Ernie Carlisle and Alex Swift were set to do battle at the start. Carlisle, however, was involved in an early skirmish that sidelined his #36 and putting Swift in command for the remainder of the event. Ted Enss, after taking some time away from micro racing, returned with his familiar #4 racer to battle Swift. In the middle laps it was Swift, Enss and Jeffrey Wills holding down the top three positions. AJ Michael brought out the yellow on lap 8 with a spin in turn 2. As the laps wound down, it became evident that the top three was going to remain the same. At the line it was Andreas taking the win. Rounding out the top five was Enss, Wills, Cameron Bellinger and Barry Pollard.
