Byler Triumphs in First Path Valley Visit
Derek Byler won the late model feature by a turn in his first ever visit to Path Valley Speedway Park on Goshorn Racing Night in memory of Mark Goshorn July 18.
Ryan McAndrews made a dramatic return to the 270 Sprints field with his win out of seventh place, and Jimmy Brookens won in the 600 Sprints. The local stock car races went to Denny Scofield in Thunder Cars and to Gary Newell in the Mini Stocks.
Next Friday night, July 25, will feature the full size economy 305 Sprints and the 1000cc Sidewinders, along with the four regular weekly classes.
Byler raced out of third place on three wheels in every turn and pulled alongside Kyle Wiser at the end of lap two, completing the pass at the end of lap three on the outside upper groove on the smooth, hard track. Shaun Jones and then Tim Smith tried to challenge Byler but the youngster from Carlisle danced on the roof of his car in victory lane. He said the track was as good as he had always heard it is in victory lane as he accepted the Goshorn Race Supply trophy. The front five were Byler, Smith, Jones, Tim Fedder and Jerry Bard and the heat winners were Scott Richwine and Jerry Bard.
Repeat past champion Jimmy Brookens passed Travis Saner on a lap 14 restart taking the outside groove out of turn four. Then Brookens raced away from the field with the balance of the front five finishers in hot pursuit. At the line it was Brookens, Dwayne Gutshall, Travis Saner, Tyler DeVault and Tyler Walton, and Walton and Brookens won the heat races.
Ryan McAndrews in 270 Sprints moved into second place on the first lap and then worked hard to get around Jason Houtz who was slowed by a lapped car in lap eleven. In his first race since last fall, Ryan McAndrews charged to the finish withstanding two cautions on the final lap as Brian Marriott tried unsuccessfully to take the lead. The front five were McAndrews, Marriott, Houtz, Tom Tice and Levi Peck and the heat winners were Steve Whary and Sean McAndrews.
Gary Newell and Gary Hendershot won the Mini Stock heat races and a “2” pill for the inversion put Newell on the pole, which he held all the way to the finish. The front five finishers were Newell, Frank Gordon, Gary DeHart, Gary Hendershot, and Dave Freidrich.
In a thrilling finish to the Thunder Car feature Denny Scofield won by half the length of this car as Terry Smith came from last place to turn the final quarter lap out of turn four into a drag race. The front five were Scofield, Smith, Tom Crum, Mark Grove and Samuel Rock.
The Scofield family and Two Wheel Promotions announced that the annual Wes Scofield Memorial Race will be August 22. The races to remember the late driving ace will pay $500 to the winners of both the Mini Stock and the Thunder Car features.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. From March to October, Path Valley races stock cars and sprints Friday nights and AMA bikes or Strictly Stock junkyard cars Saturday nights.
