DOUBLE PAYDAY FOR DURHAM WITH WINS IN 125 AND 250 STOCK
Phil Durham and his JPRacing #32 picked up wins in both the 125 & 250 Stock Classes with little or no competition. By virtue of winning his heats, he started on the pole in both 25 lappers.
In the 125 event, Durham was paired with Jim Pollard. As the green flew for the start, Durham bolted into the lead. Brittany Whitesall, from third, made quick work of Pollard and breezed into second. Whitesall moved up on Durham, but was not able to make a pass. However, at mid-point, Whitesall and Pollard tangled in turn 4 while going for the same piece of real estate sending both to the infield. This allowed Shane Braxton to assume the second spot. Again, Durham would get no challenge from second place Braxton as he cruised home under the checker followed by Braxton and Rich Mellor. Following his Victory Lane congrats, Durham climbed aboard his Stock mount and headed for another pole start.
In the 250 Stock feature, Durham was joined on the front row by Jim Garrison III. As the green waved over the field, Cameron Bellinger looped his mount in turn 2 bringing out the first caution before the completion of lap 1. On the restart, Durham was joined in competition with Todd Elwell. By lap 5, Durham made sure he put plenty of distance between himself and Elwell. A yellow for the stopped Lew Schwander on the backstretch put the Elwell machine on Durham’s bumper for the restart. Elwell poked the nose of his #19T under Durham as they came off turn 4 but couldn’t make it stick as Durham powered away. Alex Swift, meanwhile, moved into the fourth spot on lap 13. As the laps wound down, Swift moved to third behind the tenacious Elwell as the trio headed for the checkered flag. Not a bad night for Durham wrapping up two victories at the Airport oval.
The 270 feature had two hot shoes starting up front....the #35 of Drew Boyce and the #90 of Ken Andreas. Billy Murphy, another formidable competitor, would have started in the third spot, but a heat race DNS placed him at the rear of the night’s feature. Before completing lap 1, two cars stopped bringing out the yellow. Andreas took the lead on the restart. Josh Martin tagged the turn 2 wall on lap11 with enough force to warrant the red flag for a driver check. Martin was a bit shaken, but OK. His car went to the infield on the hook. Cameron Merriman and Boyce battled for second during the middle laps with Boyce keeping second for himself. On lap 22, Ryan Wozunk’s #15 developed a major steering problem causing him to tap the 4th turn wall bringing out another yellow and Wozunk a DNF. Coming off last week’s win, Andreas hung tough for back-to-back 270 wins.
A full moon could have been the possible cause of the prolific number of yellow flag laps in the 600 feature. Cameron Bellinger and Racin’ Randy Oswald occupied the front row at the start and the tangles and spins began. Last week’s winner, Bill Thomas, wasted no time in getting to the front. Once there, it was another “Thomas show” to the checkered flag. On lap 2, popular chauffeur, Angelo Mercado, took a nasty flip in turn 2 sidelining him and his #3 mount for the night. Once the field settled down to some serious racing, several duels took place around the oval. Luke Thomas and Oswald went at it with Thomas finally getting by and holding on to third at the line with Oswald close behind. In Victory Lane, Bill Thomas thanked his car owner, Gary Hunter, for giving him another strong 600 machine.
The Juniors had Rick Dieva and Justin Layton at the head of the field on the start. Layton took the early lead followed by Tyler Tank and Glenn Frye Jr. By lap 10, Tank held a commanding lead over Layton and last week’s winner, Frye. Tank’s lead increased to a ½ lap by lap 15 of the 20 lapper. Finishing in fifth on the field was Zoe Mattis. However, Mattis was actually the winner, once again, of the 125cc powered racers while Tank claimed the victory for the 250’s.
