Chuck “ The Thriller” Miller
returns after wild wreck
Rumors were swirling whether Chuck Miller would be able to return this season or even for the 2009 season. The Hoosier Tire 600 modifieds rolled into Five Mile Point Speedway on July 26th with a total of 34 cars and the first on line would be the crew and none other than Chuck Miller.
To give perspective on how this moment would be made possible lets go back about five weeks ago to Big Diamond Raceway. On the back stretch Chuck would get caught up with a car and was sent flipping down turn three and then over the wall. After a total of 7 flips and being slowed by the electrical wire, he landed 50 ft. into the woods. Chuck would walk away but the car was a different story.
Chuck along with his crew, Dwayne, Mike, Eric and his dad, Chuck sat in the garage and started taking what they could off the car to put a parts list together with the intention of selling what he could. It was a bitter pill to swallow and spirits could not have been any lower. Later on in the week, a phone call would start the ball rolling. Mangold Excavating wanted to know what it would take to get the car and program started again. Chuck said it would take a miracle. “Let’s make a miracle happen” stated Mangold.
The first phone call would be to Terry and Brenda Snyder. Terry has been involved in the racing circuit for over 25 years. He came to look at the car and loaded it to bring back to his garage. Long nights would be spent cutting the left hoop from rail to rail off the car, cut bars off of the hoop and rebuild a new hoop. The next big step would be to resquare the hoop and weld it to the car. The frame went to the jig and was found to be right on the money. Now that the frame was ready it was time to put the puzzle back together. More phone calls were made and the calls were answered. Manmiller Electric, Emmaus Beverage and Mangold Excavating came up with the financial end of the deal.
Chuck and his crew were all smiles as fellow competitors welcomed the team back. Pop [Chucks dad} silently wondered how the car would handle and paced the infield till racing got started. “ I need to thank so many people for helping us get to where we are right now. First and for most my wife Heather and my sons, Christopher and Clayton. It was amazing how Mangold Excavating, Manmiller Electric and Emmaus Beverage all came thru in these tough times. Terry needs a big shout out along with his wife Brenda. Everybody did an awesome job. My plans are to finish the season with this car and purchase a new car for next year. The car will be at Grandview for the Thunder on the Hill show Aug. 12th after some talks with Brian Mady. Right now he needs a motor and I would like to see my sponsors get the exposure they deserve so it works for both of us” Chuck stated.
By the way, Pop didn’t have to wait long to see how the car would handle as the newly renumbered #00 would take the win in heat #2. Butch Getz won heat #1 and Mike Keppler crossed the line first for heat #3. Consi went to the #44 of Chris Stockham. Unfortunately the skies would open up and cancel the nights events.
The Hoosier Tire 600 modifieds will return on Oct.25th to run the rain delayed feature along with a full nights competition to Five Mile Point Speedway. On tap will be the Roc Dart Dirt Mod Finale Southern Tier 100 plus World Products IMCA Modifed Series Finale
