RADCLIFF GETS FIRST 600 WIN
Brian Radcliff, hailing from Wilmington, Delaware picked up his very first 600 win over Angelo Mercado.
Stewart Carmichael and Mercado shared the front row for the start of the 600 feature. On the start, Mercado and Carmichael touched wheels, getting the two out of shape, and allowing third place starter Radcliff to get past both of them and take over the lead. Carmichael and Cameron Bellinger tangled in turn 2 on lap 2 sending Carmichael to the infield. Bellinger also dropped out a few laps later. On the restart, Radcliff got a good start with Mercado close behind. Luke Thomas, starting 15th on the grid, was able to move up to 8th on the 4th circuit where he met up with Bill Thomas in 7th. The two Thomas’s, by the way, are currently 1&2 at the top of the point sheet. On lap 8, the Luke Thomas machine faced a right front tire deflating. However, by lap 14, Luke was having a difficult time steering. Dropping to the rear of the field, he finally pulled his 2T machine to the infield. Mercado held on to second thru the entire 25 rounds, but could not seem to get closer than a car length on Radcliff. Several spins and tangles occurred during the second half of the event calling out the yellow banner and restarts. Jerry Allen finished in third. Sam Locuson got a high as third place but had to settle for a fourth at the checker. Radcliff had no trouble coming up with a big smile as announcer Ed Pase conducted the interview with him in Victory Lane.
Ken Andreas added another “win” sticker to his #90 racer as he picked up his third victory in as many weeks in the 270 class. Starting from the pole, the Mercerville New Jersey hot shoe kept his blue and white machine handily in front of the speedy Drew Boyce, Kyle Melvin and Ryan Wozunk. Andreas, somehow, makes his wins look easy, while being a bit concerned, I’m sure, that all will go well on every restart. Tim Buckwalter, who has been running well lately, had mechanical problems this night with his #25 mount and was a DNF. Evan Bowlsbey, who ran well in his heat event, was also a DNF after the 12th circuit. Tiffany Skias, Miss Motorsports 2008, was on hand to do some presentations but also piloted her #16 racer in competition. Unfortunately, she too was a DNF just 5 laps from the checker.
Picking up another 250 stock win was the popular New Jersey racer, Phil Durham. We saw him in Victory Lane last week. Alex Swift and Durham have hooked up recently in some 25 lap duels with one or the other on top at the checker. Durham got the jump on the start. On lap 1, a four car tangle involving Ava Mercado, Mark Schwinger, Jim Garrison and Kyle Mevin brought out the yellow and a restart. Swift got by Pollard to move into second. Newcomer this season, Jeffrey Wills has been noticeably improving each week in his 07 machine. This week he was able to claim a solid third place finish behind Swift and Durham. Pollard finished fourth followed by Cameron Bellinger.
Jim Pollard claimed the pole for the start of the 125 feature with Phil Durham alongside. Durham had another chance to repeat last week’s win. It was a lively 1-2 race up to lap 12 between Pollard and Durham up front. However, anxiety stuck on the 12th circuit as Durham tapped Pollard in turn 3 getting his #32 out of shape and sending him to the rear for the restart. Evan Krautwald then assumed the number 2 spot. However, Krautwald was a DNF on lap 17. Dana Watkins and Lee Reinhardt got together in turn 2 bring out the last caution on lap 23. On the restart, Shane Braxton inherited the runner-up position setting the field up for a familiar green, white, checker finish. Behind Braxton was Heather Colbert holding down the third spot.
While not yet an official Airport class, the Juniors have made a significant increase in their numbers. This week, 14 youngsters rolled out their machines for the nightly 20 lap feature. Early in the season, Kody Holand seemed to have trouble finishing feature races. However, Holand is now running up front and is a driver to be reckoned with. Starting on the pole, Holand held the lead thru lap 7 until Tyler Tank wrestled the spot away. At the half-way flag, it was Tank, Holand and Glenn Frye, Jr. Tank had no trouble dicing his way thru lapped traffic to pull off another Junior feature win of the 250cc powered machines. Bringing home the win in the 125’s was Ricky Dieva.
The next races at Airport Speedway will be Saturday, August 2.
