LONG DRY SPELL ENDS FOR CARMICHAEL

It’s been since mid ’07 that Stewart Carmichael rolled into Airport’s 600cc Victory Lane. This night he wasn’t to be denied the win. In the Winner’s Circle, an “out of breath” Carmichael thanked his primary sponsor, Paul Campanella’s Auto & Tire Center for sticking with him. Starting beside pole sitter Jerry Allen, Carmichael kept in close touch with Allen through the first two turns on the start. However, on the backstretch, the Allen machine pulled to a stop with a mechanical problem allowing Carmichael to assume the front spot on the re-start. Grabbing the #2 and 3 positions were the Thomas’s (Luke and Bill). On lap 7, Luke and Ed Wilberg tangled in turn 2 sending both to the infield. Bill Thomas then took control of the runner-up position and hounded Carmichael for the rest of the event. On each re-start, Thomas managed to get a wheel under Carmichael’s machine off turn 4, but that’s a far as he could get as Carmichael powered away picking up a “no doubt about it” victory. Under the checker it was Carmichael, Thomas, and Stief. Cameron Bellinger finished 4th with last week’s winner, Bryan Radcliff, landing a 5th place finish from an 8th place start.

In the 125 feature, Brittany Whitesall proved she was “Queen of the Hill” as she took the lead from pole sitter Jim Pollard on the start and never looked back. Point leader, Phil Durham, was not a factor in the night’s final outcome finishing third. Pollard held on to the runner-up spot, but there was no denying Whitesall’s speedy #77 machine.

In the 250 Stock feature, it was evident that Phil Durham wanted desperately to repeat last week’s win. His efforts, however, reeled in a DNF as his #32 machine seemed to get involved in spins and tangles with other competitors sending him to the rear each time for re-starts...his 3rd yellow and DNF coming on lap 23 after tangling with Charlie Chance’s #0 in turn 3. While all of this was happening, Cameron Bellinger was hanging tough up front holding off the Swift Mr. Alex Swift. Jeffrey Wills turned in another fine performance finishing in the 3rd spot at the checker. Lew Schwander and Ava Mercado rounded out the top five.

Another stellar performance and four-in-a-row win by Ken Andreas topped the news for the 270 feature. Starting on the pole by virtue of his Heat win, Andreas wasted no time in opening up a substantial lead over Josh Martin. The first of several yellows flew on lap 1 as the #84 of Bill Murphy spun in turn 2. On each re-start, Andreas opened up significant leads. A breath-holding moment, however, came mid-race for an Evan Bowlsbey spin in turn 4 directly in front of Andreas and the rest of the field. Andreas swung out to the turn 4 wall, missing the spinning #99 by inches. Bowlsbey, Chance and Eric Mauriello got together on lap 15 sending Bowlsbey and Mauriello to the infield. Drew Boyce, a consistent 270 front runner, kept the pressure on Martin but had to settle for 3rd at the line. Chance retired his machine on lap 18. Can Andreas make it 5 straight? We’ll just have to wait and watch next week!

The Juniors took to the track for the final feature of the night. Kody Holand who has been running very well of late held the pole with Glenn Frye Jr outside. The two ran 1-2 up to lap 7 when Frye took the top spot. At the same time, the yellow flew for AJ Mitchell who stalled on the backstretch. Tyler Tank who had just passed Frye had to return to third as the Mitchell machine went to the infield on the hook. When the green flag unfurled for the restart, Frye bolted past Holand out of turn 4 and took the lead for good in the Junior 20 lapper. Frye was the winner of the 250 clan while Tim Colbert finished first for the 125 powered Juniors.

Next races are scheduled for August 9th and billed as “Luau Night at the Races”. Should be interesting!
