Tyler Bear Wins First at Path Valley
Tyler Bear raced to the first win of his career in 305 Sprints Friday night at Path Valley Speedway Park. Adding a big thrill to the night’s program Jimmy Brookens started 12 and passed 11 cars to win in the 600 Sprints.
Stan Fleming won in the Sidewinders and Sean McAndrews took a repeat win in the 270 Sprints. In local stock car thrills Terry Smith charged out of sixth place for the Thunder Car win while Gary Dehart topped the competition in the Mini Stocks.
Melvin’s Auto Repair Night will be next Friday night, August 15, featuring the Late Models and Legends Cars.
Jimmy Brookens and Travis Saner won the heats in the 600 Sprints feature, following a rain delay, and Brookens was handicapped to start 12 in the feature for his win the week before. Eddie Rice took the lead from second place on the first lap and stayed ahead of the pack until lap 14 when Brookens, working his way forward through the pack, went to the outside groove and passed out of turn one to take the lead. Two laps later Rice was involved in a crash on the front stretch when Timmie Barrick hit the wall and shed a wing as he flipped and rolled to the infield. By lap 19 after two more cautions Brookens led by a full turn to take the checkers. The front five at the finish were Brookens, Keith McIntyre, Tim Glatfelter, Jake Murphy and Nick Saner.
Dave Freidrich led the first nine laps in the Mini Stocks with Randy Wenger and Gary Dehart right on his bumper but when Freidrich encountered the rear of the field on lap ten he was slowed by Ryan Laye and Dave Bivens and Dehart went to the outside and passed all of them in lap ten. Wenger stayed close in second and Ricky Harper came from last place to finish third but Dehart took the win after one final caution regrouped the field.
Sean McAndrews ran in second place in the 270 feature until lap seven and again lap nine he pulled alongside race leader Levi Peck. Then on lap 11 he went to the high outside line and passed both Tyler Reich and Peck, to put Reich a lap down and sail along leading by two turns and more. The front five finishers were Sean McAndrews, Levi Peck, Ryan McAndrews, Steve Whary and Tanner Hunsicker and Ryan and Sean McAndrews won the heat races.
Tyler Bear took the lead from Craig Laudermilch on the first lap of the 305 Sprints feature and, with Cowboy Jim Kennedy right behind him, stretched his lead to a full turn by lap seven. The day before was Kennedy’s 74th birthday. By lap eight lapped cars became a factor and Bear weaved a course among them to take his first win ever in the 305 class. These cars return to Path Valley in two weeks for a rematch. The front five finishers were Bear, Kennedy, Laudermilch, Todd Spangler, and George Riden. Riden and Jason Brandt won the heat races.
Stanley Fleming won the Sidewinders 1000cc heat race and then drew a zero pill for feature start inversion. From the pole the race ran without caution flags and Fleming held onto the lead all the way, winning by half a turn ahead of a front five with Jason Morrison, Ryan Greth, Tim Mertz and Rohan Beasley.
By lap four of the Thunder Car feature Terry Smith had worked out of sixth place and was challenging Ken Lawrence for the lead. On lap five Denny Scofield went to the inside for the lead and stayed in front by a turn and more until lap 19 when a tire caused him to spin on the backstretch, handing the lead to Smith who had been hanging onto second place in a close duel with Josh Walstrum. Through the final lap restart the front five were Smith, Walstrum, Mike Brindle, Lyle Barnes and Eric Seibert. Smith and Walstrum won the heats.
