LUAU NIGHT” PRODUCES A NUMBER OF FIRST TIME FEATURE WINNERS

The night was billed as Airport’s first “Luau Night at the Races”. Except for surf, sand and a pig roast, there was Hawaiian music, grass skirts, a limbo contest, beach balls and yes, even a plastic inflated palm tree!

The first feature of the night was the 250 Stockers. Cameron Bellinger, just off last weeks win, had the pole for tonight’s feature. Barry Pollard occupied the #2 spot. Bellinger wasted no time as he pulled out to a comfortable five car lead in the early laps. Charlie Chance brought out the yellow with a spin in turn 3 on lap 11. With Bellinger’s lead now evaporated for the re-start, Alex Swift and Barry Pollard engaged in a heated battle for the runner-up spot with Swift finally blasting ahead for a solid second. At half way, Rebecca LaMothe stopped on the frontstretch. Lap 14 saw a “team tangle” in turn 4 between Pollard and Phil Durham and the display of another yellow banner. Bellinger, however, was up to the challenge of staying in the lead on every restart and cruised into Victory Lane ahead of Swift for back to back feature wins. Jeffrey Wills turned in another stellar performance coming home third after a 6th place start.

The 600 feature showcased Wilmington, Delaware’s Bryant Davis. Davis has run near the front on several recent occasions this year. Tonight, Davis put it all together for an impressive first win. The field had to work thru several yellow flag restarts before the first lap was recorded. Once the field settled down, it was Davis, followed by last weeks feature winner Radcliff and Cameron Bellinger doing double duty in his #6 600. In the early going, Davis was able to open a big lead and, by lap 15, had stretched his lead to nearly a half-lap. Congratulations to a deserving first 600 winner. Rounding out the top five behind Radcliff and Bellinger were Jack Conover and Luke Thomas.

Josh Martin and Evan Bowlsbey brought the 270 field to the Green Flag. As lap 1 went into the books, Kyle Melvin, Ron Weir, Drew Boyce and Barry Pollard tangled in turn 3. Tim Buckwalter moved into the second spot followed by Kelsey Johnson and Roland Saxton Jr. As the laps ticked off, Martin padded his lead over Buckwalter. Ryan Wozunk and Eric Mauriello got together on the frontstretch with Wozunk getting the worst of the deal putting his #15 on its side. Both cars retired for the night. Four time feature winner Ken Andreas moved into the runner up spot on lap 15 and was looking to make it 5 wins in a row. However, Martin was not about to let this happen as he powered under the checker for the first time ahead of hard charger Andreas.

The 125 feature had an all girl front row bringing the field to the Green Flag. Stephanie Wright, who had a great run to win her earlier heat, moved out to the lead followed by Heather Colbert. Brittany Whitesall, last week’s winner, quickly moved to second getting around Colbert. Whitesall, on the 9th circuit, seized the opportunity to move past Wright and take over the lead. However a few laps later, a miscue by Whitesall dropped her well back in the field from which she never recovered. Phil Durham took over the lead and never looked back picking up another win. Shane Braxton moved up to second from his 4th start on the grid followed by Colbert by the time the crossed flags were shown. As the front runners crossed under the checker, it was Durham in control over Braxton and Jim Pollard followed by Colbert and Brian Kostiak.

Glenn Frye Jr showed the rest of the Juniors how to win this night’s 20 lap feature. Starting second on the field, Frye powered his Two Dogs Racing machine immediately to the front on the second circuit and held it to put another win sticker on the blue and white #12. Zoe Mattis who has picked up several decisions for the 125cc Juniors this year was again the 125cc winner. Tyler Tank had to settle for second behind Frye while Jake Allen was third for the 250cc powered racers.
