Garlock and Moore Win Firsts at Path Valley
Rance Garlock in the big fast Late Models and Shawn Moore in the high tech Mini Stocks won their first features of the season Friday night on Melvin’s Auto Repair Race Night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
Jake Murphy outran Jimmy Brookens in the 600 Sprints and Geremey Sheaffer raced out of an eighth place start to win in the Legends Cars. The close and wild racing in the 270 Sprints went to winner Brian Marriott while Denny Scofield held off all pursuers in the Thunder Cars.
In the Pennsylvania State Police special that hallmarks Melvin’s Race Nights, Trooper Scott Dowlin was the alleged winner by less than a car length through ten spinning and sliding laps with accomplices Troopers Greg Stayer, Don Beynon, James Adams and Nathan Swank close behind him. With prizes for virtually everyone and a Candy Scramble for the kids, this was the eighth year Bigler has sponsored a special race night and he said it was a “terrific” night of fast and clean racing with no problems to speak of. The racetrack, challenged by rain for many weeks, may have been in the best condition ever.
Next Friday night, August 22, will feature the Back to School Special with the Sidewinders and the full size economy 305 Sprints headlining the races.
The 600 Sprints opened with birthday boy Keith McIntyre flipped onto his side on the backstretch. On the restart Jake Murphy took the lead while Tyler DeVault came out of fifth place into second. Murphy got into lapped car traffic by lap four and used the rear of the field to protect his position until a caution regrouped the field on lap 12. Murphy held the lead and got a full turn ahead of DeVault by lap 17 but on lap 18 everything stopped under red flags as Ben Murphy, trying for third place, bounced and flipped from the flagstand into turn one. Meanwhile Jimmy Brookens, from his handicap start in 12th place, gradually worked through half the field to challenge DeVault for second place on lap 18, but he did not manage his high and low attempts to pass the flying Murphy. The front five finishers were Jake Murphy, Brookens, DeVault, Tyler Walton and Travis Saner and the heat winners were Brookens and Saner.
Shawn Moore, in a rare appearance, won the pole starting position in the Mini Stocks and took off like a rocket with Gary Newell close behind through the first ten laps. Then points leaders Rickey Harper and Gary Dehart caught up from back in the pack and then from lap 17 to the finish Moore and Harper raced side by side to a thrilling finish with Moore less than half a length ahead of Harper with heat winner Dehart in third followed by Newell and then Scott Gordon. Once a frequent winner, this was Moore’s first winning visit in several years.
Geremey Sheaffer from eight place worked his way through the INEX Legends Cars to take over second place on lap 15 and then race side by side with leader Nathan Fisher until lap 18 when he managed to slide to the inside around turn four and take the lead. A final lap caution gave Fisher a last chance but Sheaffer pulled away on the front stretch for his win. Sheaffer, Fisher, Andy Lupfer, Jason Ewing and Justin Grim were the front five finishers and Sheaffer and Grim won the heats.
In the night’s headline show Rance Garlock won the lead on the first Late Model lap and roared away with Brian Lessley close behind. Tim Fedder came out of fourth and passed Lessley for second on lap 15 but on the final three laps Garlock put Garrett Gray a lap down and used the lapped car to hold off the pursuers. The front five were Garlock, Fedder, Lessley, Steve Bailor and Scott Lupfer and Fedder won the heat race.
The 270 Sprints provided a hair raising thrill on a lap three restart when Zach Fouse and Sean McAndrew tangled on the back stretch and McAndrew left the track in pieces. Brian Marriott continued to lead by a turn and more with Ryan McAndrew his only close challenger after a lap eight restart and to the finish Marriott used a lapped car to keep McAndrew at bay. Marriott, McAndrew, Steve Whary, Sam Lamothe and Levi Peck were the first five across the line and the heat winners were Marriott and Ryan McAndrew.
Denny Scofield led the Thunder Cars all the way to the finish but Lyle Barnes pulled alongside him on laps 17 and again on 18 and then put on a final sprint to the finish but Scofield won by less than half a car length ahead of the big field. Terry Smith was third behind Barnes with Randy Stull and then Mike Brindle filling out the front five. Scofield and Smith won the heat races.
