GIRLS RULE AIRPORT FEATURES

Three of the night’s five feature events were awarded to our young female chauffeurs. Two of them, the sisters’ Matherly, grabbed the 125cc and Junior features while one notched the 270cc clash.

In the 270 feature, Kelsey Johnson who has been running a somewhat irregular Airport schedule, led and won from the pole. However, she could easily have gotten the “driver of the night award” as she survived numerous restarts and three, count ‘em, three Green, White, restarts before the Checkers finally secured her victory. What was even more impressive was that she was pressured the entire 25 circuits by four-time feature winner Ken Andreas. In her Victory Lane interview, Kelsey admitted to some nervousness as she said she had never experienced so many restarts. Johnson was followed across the line by Andreas, Kyle Reinhardt, Sam LaMothe and Brian Morrill.

Evan Krautwald and Corissa Matherly shared the 125cc feature front row for the start. The yellow flew right away on lap 1 as Brian Kostiak looped his mount in turn 2. It was only a preview of what was to come later for Kostiak. Phil Durham powered past Krautwald to take over second. It was Matherly, Durham, Krautwald and Braxton thru lap 12 when Kostiak, this time, snap rolled his #4 in the fourth corner and became a DNF. On the restart, Matherly opened up a substantial lead over Durham thru the balance of the 25laps to pick up her first class win.

The third of the female wheel-twister winners came from our Junior class. Kelli Matherly, was the Junior pole sitter sharing the front row with Tyler Tank. Tank led at the start but was later involved in several on-track aggressive driving incidents and a jump start as determined by the Race Director and DQ’d. This moved Glenn Frye Jr to the head of the field. Matherly spun her #89 early in the event and taking up a rear spot on the restart. As leader Frye was making his way thru turn 2 on lap 14, a tangle caused him to spin which “magically” restored Matherly, who had been making progress back to the front, now to the lead. Also, on lap 14, frequent winner of the Junior’s 125cc powered racers, tagged the front wall and rolled her machine retiring her for the night. Matherly, now, had no trouble holding onto the lead to take the win.

Cameron Bellinger picked up another win in the 250 Stock feature over Barry Pollard and Todd Elwell. A breath-holding incident occurred on lap 12 as Ava Mercado was turned into the frontstretch wall. Her #3 rebounded off the wall directly into the path of the oncoming Ken Andreas. Andreas was unable to avoid a hard crash with Mercado’s machine sidelining both vehicles. However, neither driver sustained injuries from the spectacular crash. At the checkers, it was Bellinger, Pollard and Elwell.

The 600 feature of the evening was all Luke Thomas. Thomas led the event from the drop of the green to the checkers. Numerous spins, flips, tangles and restarts marked the event leaving Thomas never having to navigate thru traffic. Some seers noted that tonight’s on track problems were the result of an evident full moon. Who knows? It might just have been!
