At Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway, the 600cc Micro-Sprints competed in 11 races before a driver was able to repeat as the feature winner. Now that Kenny Miller has become the first to repeat in '08, he refuses to let go of that parking spot in victory lane.
Miller captured his third of the season, and second consecutive, 600cc triumph on Saturday night.
The Birdsboro, PA wheel-twister started eighth in the stellar field of 24. Miller was up to fourth by lap five, then zipped past Jamie Fetterolf for the runner-up slot three tours later.
With fifth-starting Brenden Bright out front, Miller needed the next 12 circuits to catch, study, plan, then execute his pass for the lead. Moving by the Collegeville teenager's No. 88 to grab the point on lap 20, Miller went on to record another victory in his Habecker Excavating/ Ken's Cycle Repair/ Stallard No. 5m.
Jamie Kostic, fresh off his big win at Grandview on August 12, raced his way into third just prior to the halfway mark of this 25-lap feature. With three to go, the Swedesboro, NJ charger slipped past Brenden Bright for second, then chased Miller to the stripe. Mike Dicely maneuvered his way to fourth with 22 complete, then remained in that position over the final tours.
Chris Snyder, who took the green in 14th, sliced a steady path toward the front, reaching the top five at the two-to-go signal. Snyder cashed in for fifth-place money when it was all over.
600cc heat races went to Doug Smith, Kostic, Dicely, and Brenden Bright. Twin consolations were claimed by Heath Hehnly and Shaun Brandel.
Mike Rutherford notched his fifth triumph of the year, and second straight, in the 270cc main event.
Mohnton, PA resident Jared Davis has been running better and better, and last Saturday night, he appeared ready to bust out and win his first feature race. But Rutherford, in the midst of a championship battle with Richie Hartman, had other ideas...
Davis, who started from the pole, paced the first 21 circuits of the 25-lapper. Rutherford had to fight off a determined Scott Gingrich for the fourth position, then wrestled third away from Hartman with ten trips remaining.
The Newmanstown, PA lead-foot passed Greg Miller for second on lap 17, then snatched the top spot away from Davis with four to go.
Rutherford was the first driver under the checkered, with Hartman securing the runner-up position from Davis on the final lap.
Davis hung on for third (his best Clyde Martin finish), with Greg Miller finishing fourth. Heath Hehnly, who rambled from 19th on the starting grid up to fifth in the first 15 laps, was still in that position when the race ended.
Greg Miller and Jared Davis were victorious in the two heat races run for the 270's on Saturday.
In 250cc Four-Stroke competition, point leader Chad Rhoads finally broke the ice, winning his first main event of the season.
Greg Schmuck was in front for 14 of the 25-laps, until Rhoads rumbled by in his No. 93. Richie Hartman, the driver chasing Rhoads in the Four-Stroke point standings, blasted into second with seven to go, but the seven-time winner could not catch Rhoads on this occasion.
At the finish, it was Rhoads, Hartman, Schmuck (the best finish of his Lanco career), Eddie Nocera, and Jared Gabers.
Hartman and Rhoads captured the two heats for the 250cc Four-Strokes.
It took four months, but the defending 125cc champion finally won a feature in this division.
Jesse Maurer, the Mount Joy Outlaw, swept by a strong-running Kyle Henninger at the halfway point, then drove to his first victory of the season in the 125cc class.
Henninger held on for runner-up honors, with Cody Drace coming home in third. Dave Grube and Russell Pannebecker rounded out the top five.
Twin heats for the 125's went to Grube and Brian Sholley.
Jason Hehnly became another chauffeur who nabbed his first win of '08 on Saturday evening, racing to the Sportsman triumph.
Hehnly led all 25-laps from his pole position, fending off the challenges of Jamie Fetterolf.
Five-time Sportsman victor Kenny Miller shot into second early, then fell back to 18th before rebounding to finish fourth behind Hehnly, Fetterolf, and Billy Logeman. Donna Geib was fifth.
Brett Wanner, Steve Drevicki, and Jason Swavely won the three heat races for the Sportsman micros. Tim Ziegler triumphed in the consolation event.
This Saturday's event will be sponsored by Barry Boyd Racing Videos. The August 23 card of Micro-Sprint racing will feature qualifying heats, consolations, and 25-lap main events for the 125cc, 250cc Four-Stroke, 270cc, 600cc, and Sportsman classes. They will run in that order, as the season-long rotation for point shows continues. Warm-ups begin at 5 p.m., with racing at 6:00.
The annual Labor Day Shootout takes place on Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31. The Shootout offers one of the biggest overall purses in Micro-Sprint racing, with the 600cc and 270cc feature winners looking at $1,000 paydays.
