Ray Evernham picked up his first Weikel Racewear SpeedSTR series victory Friday night at the Penn Can Speedway followed by Erin Crocker.
Penn Can promoters fought foul weather all week in the Susquehanna, PA area. Al Wilcox and Reed Miller could not get on the track until Thursday morning to start preparing their facility for Friday nights action. They put in a long Thursday and many gallons of fuel to get the track prepared even though weather was not looking to favorable for Friday. Their efforts sure paid off, Fridays weather turned out beautiful and the racing surface was fast with good bite and multiple groves for the exciting SpeedSTR feature.
Erin Crocker of Wilbraham, MA driving her self owned #19 would bring a strong field of Weikel Racewear STR's to the green flag for feature action, but it was Doug Rose in his Flurer Machine and Tool #95 grabbing the early lead out of turn 2. Ray Evernham had quickly moved into the #2 spot from his fourth place starting position. By the end of lap 4 Evernham solidly worked the bottom and would clear Rose for the lead. Rose would battle back on the high side only to clip the backstretch wall ending his night 3 laps later. Crocker would assume the second position as Paul Lotier Jr. who won the Slingshot feature earlier in the evening was showing his muscle in the STR feature as well. Lotier pulled his 7L machine along side of Crocker a number of times for the second position as current point leader Nick Pecko of nearby Vandling, PA emerged in this heated battle with his #42 NEP Wireless STR. Lotier continued to work high, low, slide jobs, he threw everything he had at Crocker, but she continued to maintain the second position as Evernham would extend his lead by 5 car lengths. By lap 12 Crocker had solidly secured the second place position and began to slowly reel in Evernham as Pecko remained third.
Brian Weaver a multi time track champion in the Modified division at the Penn Can Speedway was aboard the #17 Tobias owned STR. Weaver who started last on the field was making his way to the front working the multiple grooves of the Speedway. Weaver would take over the 4th position from Willy Evernham of Mooresville, NC on lap 15 and set sail for Pecko. As the laps wound down Crocker would pull within 3 car lengths of Evernham who lead since lap four. Evernham would come home the victor followed by Crocker, Pecko, Weaver, and Billy VanInwegen of Sparrow Creek, NY would round out the top five in his #23 STR.
Notes:
Ray Evernham had a great night at Penn Can not only impressively winning the feature but also earlier in the evening working past the SpeedSTR star Nick Pecko in the K&N Dash to win as well.
Paul Lotier Jr. did double duty in the Slingshot and SpeedSTR divisions. Lotier won the Slingshot feature and was a contender in the STR feature until a late race pitstop.
Former USAC Silver Crown star Gary Hieber made his first start on the dirt in the Weikel Racewear SpeedSTR series, driving the Bucks County International #6. Hieber would come home a solid 8th.
