Higgs wins over a 40 car field
Ryan Higgs pulled into Grandview Speedway on Sat. Aug. 16th unsure of what the night would bring. He had spent the day searching frantically for a drain plug that had been stripped in the morning. After finding one, Ryan and his crew pulled into the pits just before the Hoosier Tire 60 modifieds were ready to take to the track. The uncertainty grew when he found out that 40 cars signed in and only 24 would qualify.
The 600 modifieds had already made a visit on Aug. 12th for the ever popular Thunder on the Hill series. 20 cars were invited to participate and for some drivers it would be their first feature only format. Starting on the grid would be the #61 of Mark Schaffer along with the #64 of Aaron Bowes. By lap #4 Eric “ROY” Whitbe would led for the next 11 circuits before a caution would set up a three way battle for the remaining laps. Butch Getz made his way thru the field and so did Dillon Stein. With 2 laps remaining, Stein took the top spot followed by Getz but Whitbe would not hand it over so quick. The three would stay within a bumper of each other with Stein edging out to win his first career 600 modified feature.
Mother nature would win on Aug.14th at Kutztown Speedway as 23 cars were waiting for the skies to clear. The show was cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
Beautiful weather would welcome the 600 modifieds back to Grandview on Aug. 16th. Doug Borger, series owner, was pleased to see that 40 cars made the trip. It was the largest car count in series history and only looks to increase over the off season. Cody Coons, rookie of the year contender, qualified his #82 mount and would see a fourth place finish garnering the highest finishing rookie. Tyler Bartik also a rookie contender qualified 21st and ran a strong race to finish in the 10th spot.
Ryan Higgs would set the pace for the 24 car field and lead every lap. Butch Getz tried every trick in the book to get by him but to no avail. In victory lane, Ryan wanted to thank his dad, Chris for everything he has done this season.
The 600 modifieds will return to Grandview Speedway on Aug. 23rd and then head to Penn Can Speedway, located in Susquehanna, Pa for the King of the Can weekend on Sept. 13th.
