Leidy and Lawrence Win in Scofield Memorial Races
Dave Leidy in the Mini Stocks and Chip Lawrence in the Thunder Cars were $500 winners in the Wes Scofield Memorial Races August 22 at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
In the full size economy 305 Sprints Craig Laudermilch won while other sprint winners were Ryan McAndrew in the 270 class, Tyler DeVault in the 600 Sprints, and Tim Mertz in the Sidewinders.
Next Friday night, August 29, will feature Thompson Corner Deli Night with the Late Models and Legends Cars headlining the full racing program.
The 25 lap four-cylinder races to remember the late racer Wes Scofield headlined the night’s show and in the Mini Stocks Dave Leidy took the lead from Ricky Harper on the second lap and led all the way to the finish. Harper, from second, dropped out with mechanical failures on lap 14 and Leroy Long took over second place but Leidy led by a turn at lap 16 and stayed well ahead of the pack to the finish. Harper and Leidy won the heat races.
The full field of up to 26 Thunder Cars started their crash filled feature with Denny Scofield in the lead and eventual leader Ken ‘Chip’ Lawrence Jr. in 16th place. Scofield and John Rasp fought for the lead until lap 14 when a restart put Tom Crum in the lead and Lawrence second and they raced that way until lap 19 when Lawrence pulled alongside Crum and lapped him at the completion of lap 19. Crum finished a close second with Lyle Barnes third, Scofield fourth and Jeff Arnsberger fifth. The heat winners were Denny Scofield, brother to the late Wes Scofield, Mark Grove and Barnes.
Craig Laudermilch took the lead out of his third place start on the first lap of the 305 Sprint feature and stayed there to the finish. From lap 11 on he weaved among lapped cars to stay well ahead of the pack and after two restarts on lap 17 he kept ahead of Michael Wagner to win by a turn. The balance of the front five were Mike Heckman, Todd Spangler and Jim Kennedy and the heat winners were Tyler Bear and Heckman.
After three bad starts for the first lap Tyler DeVault led the 600 Sprints all the way to the checkers, weaving among the slower lapped cars from lap nine on. At the finish he put three cars between his #18x and Jimmy Brookens who had charged out of eighth place. The heat winners were Eric Bodine, Brookens and Jake Murphy.
Tim Mertz passed Steve Dull for the Sidewinders lead on a lap two restart and built a significant lead until a caution on lap 17 regrouped the cars. Ryan Greth, who has been battling Mertz for the points lead for two months, came from seventh place into second on lap 15 but could not manage a pass. At the finish the front five were Mertz, Greth, Jason Morrison, Denny Landvater and Jerry Strausbaugh and the heat winners were Stan Fleming and Dull.
Ryan McAndrew took the 270 Sprints lead out of third place on the third try to start the feature and he cruised to the win with his brother Sean in second from lap three on. Steve Whary, Zack Fouse and Adam Warner filled out the front five and the heat winners were Whary and Sean McAndrew.
