August 22nd Path Valley.. Mertz takes the win, Greth takes second…the shootout continues.

Finally a perfect weather night helped produce a perfect track surface that resulted in many teams expressing their gratitude to Path Valley for the increased “fun factor” from the super racy multi groove surface.

From his 3rd position on the grid, Tim Mertz was always going to be the one to beat. All year it seems that Mertz has “found something” to his liking at Path Valley and this night’s feature race was no exception.

Tim was able to take over the lead on a lap two restart and built on it until a lap 17 caution regrouped the field. At that time it put Ryan Greth on Tim’s bumper. Although applying heaps of pressure during the short sprint to the finish, Greth was unable to deny Mertz the victory.

In victory lane Tim said “A special thanks must go to Path Valley for providing a great racing surface tonight. The Sidewinder Sprints are an absolute blast to drive, especially when it slicks off a little. The throttle control that you need really puts the driver into the equation. I have to give a lot of thanks to our team made up of, Dad, Ron and Joe. None of this would be possible without the support of Mertz's Moving, Allison Door Sales, Guhl Motors and RTS chassis.”

Passing was the name of the game throughout the field, Morrison spun early and came back to 3rd, Beasley started 9th and was up to 3rd before collision damage sidelined his effort. Fleming charged from 12th to 4th, before being involved in the lap 17 accident. Jerry Strausbaugh put in his best effort of the season, challenging for 3rd in the last laps before racing contact with Landvanter allowed Morrison to pass both of them and that left Jerry with a season best 5th place finish.

If there was a hard luck award, it would go to Sean Campbell. Sean has been unable to break his Path Valley jinx all year, this time it was a brake master cylinder that went out in hot laps. Although Sean and Ray hurriedly replaced it, before the feature, the car still wasn’t right so Sean was an early exit. After the races, Sean shared with a laugh, “I will be back. I feel that our luck at Path Valley is surely due to change soon. Maybe I’ll get Ray to bring over different beer this week to try and break the curse??”

In heat racing action, it looked like the night would belong to Stan Fleming. Fleming was absolutely flying in the first heat and won comfortably in the Saner Motorsports, Yamaha powered Hyper. Steve Dull captured his first heat win with Sidewinder Sprints in the second heat in his Yamaha powered Hyper. Dull’s heat was loaded with the top 4 in points, Greth, Mertz, Morrison and Beasley so it was no easy feat.

With only 2 points now separating the top two, and only 6 races to go, it looks like the points chase for the coveted Hyper Cup is going to be a nail biter.
Parity report: Once again the top 3 cars all had different engines. Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki filled the podium.

Heat to Stan Fleming and Steve Dull

This Week’s Question;

Q. After his break through win at Path Valley last week, can Stan Fleming join the 2008 repeat winners club this week?

A. Stan was on a charge from his 12th starting position and was in 4th on the lap 17 restart. Unfortunately contact with Beasley, who was running 3rd at the time, resulted in both cars coming to a stop in turn one on the restart.

Next Week’s Questions;

Q. With the Sidewinders having the Labor Day long weekend off to regroup. The next race will be a double header weekend with Path Valley (9/05) and Trail-Way (9/06). This begs the question….Can someone sweep the two nights?
