REINHARDT, POLLARD, SWIFT AND CONOVER RECORD WINS
The night was billed as Fan Appreciation Night and the racers put on a good show for them. Lots of special prizes were given to the spectators during the evening as the Speedway showed their appreciation for their faithful fans.
Kyle Reinhardt grabbed his first win as he sped to victory in the 270cc class feature. George Savaren Jr., a long time Airport competitor, looked real racy this week as he put his Stallard #43 on the pole. Reinhardt occupied the number 2 spot. On lap 2, Rebecca LaMothe, Charles Colburn and Peter Ryan tangled in turn 4 bringing out the yellow. Both LaMothe and Ryan had to retire their machines. On the restart, Savaren’s machine looked like the car to beat thru the first 11 laps. However, Reinhardt, who had kept the pressure on Savaren, took over the lead and held it for his first win. Marco Michetti and Roland Saxton Jr battled back and forth for several rounds with Saxton making a nice run to hold onto the fourth spot. Eddie Wagner, absent from Airport competition for awhile, was back in action and finished third. Ken Andreas, who started 10th on the grid, managed to finish 5th.
In the 125cc feature, Jim Pollard went wire to wire to notch another victory for the #0. The first caution came on lap 1 as Phil Durham stopped on the backstretch. A short push got the #32 going again and Phil had to begin his journey to the front from the rear. By lap 5, cars began to bunch up in the middle of the pack. Unfortunately, last week’s winner, Corissa Matherly, was a victim this week as she rolled her #17 in turn 2. Appearing stunned as she sat in her car, the red flag came out and Matherly was attended to quickly by the EMT’s. A short exam indicated she was OK, but she had to retire to the infield with her damaged car. Brittany Whitesall worked her way to second. Shane Braxton, who has been fighting desperately to hang onto second place in the points chase, tonight had a long trek from a 14th start to hang onto 4th. Then, once again, it was Green, White, Checkers from lap 23 as Evan Krautwald attacked a 4th turn berm tire bringing out the final caution. At the line, it was Pollard, Whitesall and Kostiak.
The 250cc Stockers had Jim Garrison III and Phil Durham on the front row. As the cars thundered out of turn 4, several cars, including the #6 of Cameron Bellinger, tangled and Bellinger rolling his racer. His car sustained some damage, but after righting the car, he chose to soldier on. On the restart, Durham got by Garrison. Alex Swift moved into second while Durham was able to open up a good lead. Lap 15 saw a six car pile up in turn 4 sidelining Lew Schwander and Rebecca LaMothe. Jeffrey Wills moved into third and eventually to the runner-up position. Meanwhile, Bellinger was not deterred by his “injured” race car and wound up finishing a respectable 3rd. After a restart on lap 16, Alex Swift was in command over Durham who began to fade from the front runners finally finishing 7th. Wills was able to grab second after a very consistent run. A returning Marco Michetti came home
5th.
The 600cc ground pounders could not catch pole sitter Jack Conover as he was able to power away from the competition on each and every restart. Bill Thomas was the only challenger behind flawless handling by Conover. Angelo Mercado turned the driving chores of his #3 this night over to one John Leslie. After a three car tangle on the front stretch on lap 3 severely damaged and sidelined the #3, Mercado may have had other thoughts on his generosity. On lap 13, the #99 of Lou Onimus pulled up “lame” too quickly in turn 1 to be dodged by Jerry Allen and Bryant Davis. The trio tangled sending Allen and Onimus to the infield. Conover, Bill Thomas and Bob DeVault hung tough as the laps wound down coming under the flags 1,2,3. As a side note, Conover picked up an additional $50 from Hal Lewis of H&R Auto Repairs of Kennett Square, PA in memory of Hal’s brother, Robert. Both Robert and Hal were competitors during the earlier days of Airport Speedway.
Finally, a word or two about the Juniors. Tyler Tank pulled off another victory in the Junior 250’s while Zoe Mattis did the same for the 125cc powered cars. Most of the race had Tank, Jake Allen and Ricky Dieva holding down the front three positions and finishing the same way. Glenn Frye Jr., who has been holding all the cards in the Junior’s point chase could only muster a fourth place finish after starting 12th.
This was the only class of the night with NO DNF’s.
The Speedway will be dark next Saturday, August 30. Racing resumes on the 1/8th mile clay oval on Saturday, September 6. Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Holiday.
