Modified Stars Ted Christopher, Woody Pitkat On Deck
By Mark McKeon
WESTFIELD, MA Chili Bowl Champion and 36 time ARDC Midget winner Johnny Heydenreich came, saw and conquered in the Quad 4 Midget feature at Whip City Speedway on Saturday. Wheeling Scott Viets’ Oldsmobile Quad 4 powered D&G chassis, Heydenreich started fifth and took the lead on a third lap restart following a red flag for a multi car accident in which Eli Deshaies flipped and both Bethany Viets and Paul Luggelle got all four wheels off the ground. Heydenreich didn’t fare as well in the 750cc Mini Sprint feature, retiring Jack McKeon’s car late in the race due to overheating.
“The Quad 4s are a really a neat division, I love this place, this is what racing is all about,” the loquacious Heydenreich said after the race. “The car was handling right and I really enjoyed the track and the facilities. I had a blast.”
After a 2008 campaign that was nearly as frustrating as Hillary Clinton’s, Luke Greenwood of Hudson, NH finally picked up a long overdue feature win in the 600cc Mini Sprints. Greenwood has had numerous strong runs during the year, but both mechanical and strategic hurdles kept him from grabbing the bass ring before tonight.
A nail biting 1200cc Mini Sprint feature saw Jamie Beaudry of Westfield, MA inherit the lead when race leader Bob Dance crashed with just 2 laps remaining. Chris Haskell charged from eighth to finish second, and R.J. Tufano roared from 11th to finish third.
After finding his way to the outside pole position, Paul Rose of Lexington, MA picked up his second 750cc Mini Sprint feature of the year. John Missale of Hadley, MA led from flag to flag in the 750 Sportsman feature.
An extremely determined Brett Crower of Westfield, MA led both his heat and the Modified Lite feature from wire to wire.
This Saturday, NASACR Whelan Modified Tour points leader Ted Christopher and Modified/ Late Model star Woody Pitkat will race in the Whip City Speedway 750cc Mini Sprints.
