Can a 1998 Hyper 270 with a rack mounted stearing box be converted back to direct stearing without a box? My driver says that with the rack , she can't feel the car right in the corner.

Is there a bar towards the front of the frame? across the top of the front of the frame that has a hole down through or a threaded slug? If you have that you would be able to make it direct steering but you would have to buy a new steering shaft and the heim for the shaft to sit in.

If needed I have a complete direct steering upper & lower shafts off RTS/Stallard $30 E-mail Rpm749@aol.com

I would say yeah. takek the rack out, put a heim back in, put a direct mount shaft back in, an change your steering arms back to direct mount arms. Most likely you will have to get a new tie rod because it will throw your toe off.
I replace rack w/direct steering in 99 Hyper 270 w/these parts. Put rack back in when I sold car. More info E-mail me Rpm749@aol.com

rpm,
I will send you an email about the parts you have. Once the steering rack is taken out, theire isn't anything to mount the direct steering too. Just wondered how you did it and yes I will take the parts if this is the way to do it .
thanks
George
email me at www.papermanracing@yahoo.com if I don't get back to you right away.

you will need to put a hiem down there somewhere for the steering shaft to go through. may have to weld a tube across the frame or connect the rack mounts to be able to put the hiem end in.

Does anyone know how long a tie rod I would need to run from one spindle to the other for direct steering ??? Also , would I have to change the steering arms ??? I have the slow ratio and the fast ratio ones.

George,
these are parts from Hyper on Page 35 of the 07-08 book part numbers 16-203 and 16-202. your left steering arm will have 2 holes on it 1 for the tie rod (which will be closer to the spindle) and 1 for the steering the right arm will have 1 hole (the 1 closer to the spindle). the length of the tie rod will depend on the length of yoru axle. I may be off by 1/2 in or so but I think you need approxmitaly a 32" tie rod for a 36" axle. I think that is close it may be longer but you need to make sure you have your Toe set to find the length of the tie rod.

hi
I purchaed the two steering arms from hyper for direct steering. Bob this is a question for you. You said that I would have to grind off a 1/4 " inch off the steering coloum for the setup I bought from you. Can I take that off the top of the steering colum or does it have to be off the bottom. their is not much to gind off the bottom thats why I am asking.
Does anybody know howw long the tie rod between the two steering arms will be on a 34 " coil over axle ??? Thanks for all the help.
George

George,
I had a stallard 34 3/4 in front axle and the tie rod I had for that was measured at 30 3/4. so going off those measurements and you haveing a 34" axle I would say a 30 tie rod would work for you.

Hi,
I bought a 29" rod...too short. A 30" rod is to o long. I need a 29.5 " rod bored for 7/16" rod ends.
thanks,
george

Just cut a 1/4" off of each end w/ a hack saw... I done it a bunch of times when I haven't had the right radius rods, etc....

you could also adjust the Hiems 1/4 at each end as well to get to your half inch needed.
