DON’S AUTOMOTIVE MALL AND XCEL CHASSIS ANNOUNCE THE BIGGEST PAYOUT IN SERIES HISTORY FOR THE
BILL HESS MEMORIAL 50 TO BE HELD ON SEPT. 25TH AT LINDAS SPEEDWAY

Xcel Chassis, series owner, Doug Borger is pleased to welcome Don’s Automotive Mall as the primary sponsor for the Bill Hess Memorial 50. “Don’s Automotive has become a leader in sponsoring the racing community. They have two locations, one being in Binghamton, NY and the second one here in Pennsburg, PA. and with their partnership we are able to offer the biggest payout to date. The winner will receive $1200 with an increase thru the 24 car field with $95.00 to take the green.”
Doug added “Don’s Automotive Mall is an industry leader in quality recycled parts with a standard 1 year warranty. You can see their huge inventory on line at www.donsauto.com. I am proud to share their support and passion for the racing community.
Passion is a word you hear often in the circuits of racing. Track promoters, drivers, local business and loyal fans share this passion on most summer weekends. One of the most overlooked heroes of the sport is our local photographers that bring the passion to life for all to share and enjoy.
Bill Hess, a staff photographer with Area auto Racing News for over 40 years, understood this passion and spent a lifetime sharing it with others. Earl Krause, assistant news editor for AARN, summed it up best when he wrote “ Bill combined his natural skill of photography, in which his career spanned the “darkroom era” of film developing of the 1960s to the present day “digital” age, with his passion for racing.”
His career took him to famed racetracks such as Nazareth and Reading and as far as Virginia with the Arena Car Series. You could also run in to him at places like Big Diamond, Grandview, Kutztown and Lanco or on the tour with the URC sprint cars as their official tour photographer. No matter where the races took him, whether it was the bull rings or speedways, you could always count on Bill being inside so we could enjoy the outside.
Barry Angstadt, who writes a weekly column titled Small Cars- Big Buzz for AARN, shared a story with me I thought showed his generosity. “When Bill heard I was going to Hamlin for their final race of the season in 2008, Bill asked me if he could tag along. “Sure,” I replied, “but there’s one catch. I am leaving in the morning because my daughter has a field hockey game at King’s College that afternoon. After the game, I’m going straight to Hamlin because it’s only 45 minutes from King’s.” I figured he would politely decline, rather than sit thru a field hockey game in which he knew none of the players but I should have known better. “Okay, no problem,” he said. “It’ll get me out of the house.”
Of course, Bill put his camera to work at the game as well as at the races that night. I ended up with several terrific photos, at no cost, of my kid playing field hockey. “You can have the pictures,” offered Bill, “for taking me along to the races.” Some times Bill and Barry would get together after a night of racing at Lanco for a late night meal at the Temple Restaurant in Muhlenberg Township. Bill would share some of his photos with Barry along with tons of racing stories. Barry shared some final thoughts with me. “Bill told me, repeatedly, that he would gladly take any photos I needed to run with my column in AARN. If he didn’t have a decent shot he would gladly go to their garage and take a few knowing there was no opportunity to make money in an offer such as this. I miss those late night meals.”
I have to say thanks to AARN, Earl Krause and Barry Angstadt for bringing the spirit of Bill Hess alive through their words just as Bill brought life through his photos. During my research, I came to realize that sometimes Bill would grumble like a bear then could purr like a cat with his genuine passion for racing and sharing in its glory making a lasting impression on those that were fortunate enough to meet him.
Doug Borger sat down with me and explained why he decided to honor Bill this way. “Bill was an all around good guy. I considered him one of the best in his field and have admired his work through out my racing career. He always went above and beyond to get the perfect shot and that’s exactly what you would get which was nothing but the best. He was a walking encyclopedia of racing with his photos. They would come to life sharing stories and making memories and this is my way of saying “Thanks for the memories.”
Come and enjoy a night dedicated to the honor of Bill Hess on Sept.25th at Lindas Speedway with some great racing action as the Xcel Chassis 600 modifieds hit the track at 5:30.
