Steele, Murphy and Spangler Lead Path Valley Winners

From a front row start Kevin Steele took command of the 600 Sprints and raced almost non-stop to his first Path Valley Speedway Park win of the season Friday night.

Todd Spangler won in the full size 305 Sprints while Ben Murphy won his first Sidewinders feature and Steve Whary led all the way from pole to checkers in the 270 Sprints.

Taking home the Path Valley Family Restaurant trophies in the local stock cars were Ricky Harper in the Mini Stocks and Jeremy Ott in the Thunder Cars.

Next Friday night, Sept. 12, the Late Models and Legends take their turn as headline divisions, replacing the 305 Sprints and the Sidewinders.

Kevin Steele set the pace for the thrilling night of racing as he opened the show with the 600 Sprints. A tiny bit of luck in the draw for inversion put him on the front row and he immediately leaped ahead of pole sitter Tyler DeVault and started building a creditable lead. A lap four caution for a spun car offered the only chance to regroup the field and Steele again held the lead on the restart.

By lap eight Tyler Walton was dogging Steele’s rear bumper but Steele began pulling away and started putting the rear of the field a lap down by lap nine. By lap 13 Steele led by two full turns and he maneuvered among lapped cars to the finish with Walton a distant second place, followed in the front five by Dwayne Gutshall, Jesse Fitz and Keith McIntyre. Travis Saner and Fitz won the heats.

Jeremy Ott started eighth in the big field of Thunder Cars and after a couple bad starts took over second place on lap two and then took the lead from Danny McAllen with an inside pass through lap five. Tom Crum passed Chris Allen to take second place on lap nine but could not catch Ott. The front five finishers were Ott, Crum, Anderson, Justin Good and Denny Scofield. Ott and Terry Smith won the heat races.

Ben Murphy is no stranger to the Path Valley victory lane in his 600 Sprint, but this week he was also piloting a Henchcraft 1000cc in the Sidewinders feature and he proved his mastery of the track by surging from seventh place to start into the lead on the first lap. By lap six he was leading by more than a turn and he began lapping the rear of the field by lap eight. A caution in lap 15 regrouped the field but by then Murphy had his own groove and he charged to the win; followed in the front five by Jason Morrison, Tim Mertz, Ryan Greth and Chad Hough. Mertz and Murphy won the heat races.

Todd Spangler took the lead in the 305 Sprints on the first lap completed and then ran like Sarah Palin to his win with Tyler Bear in second a lapped car back as Jason Brandt and Jeff Sell covered his rear bumper. Doug Distasio and Michael Heckman won the heats and the front five across the line were Spangler, Tyler Bear, Heckman, Distasio and Cowboy Jim Kennedy.

Steve Whary got the 270 Sprints pole position with a pill draw of eight for the feature lineup and he never looked back. Brian Marriott took second place on a lap two restart and Sean McAndrew came from 12th to race third after lap six, but Whary held a handy lead all the way to the finish. Ryan McAndrew was fourth and Tim Mertz took fifth while Jason Houtz and Zack Fouse won the heat races.

Ricky Harper passed Frankie Gordon for the Mini Stock lead on lap 12 and won by a full turn. Twice the Mini Stocks turned turn four into a junkyard parking lot with spun and wrecked cars, but Harper, who started fourth, avoided all the carnage. The front five finishers were Harper, Gordon, Leroy Long, Troy Eckenrode and Gary Dehart who had started last, and Dehart and Frankie Gordon won the heat races.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. From March to October, Path Valley races stock cars and sprints Friday nights and AMA bikes or Strictly Stock junkyard cars Saturday nights.
