NSW Lightning Sprints Embrace Lower Cost Racing

6th December, 2010

On Saturday December 4, The NSW Lightning Sprint Association held a general meeting where a new Specification Rule Book was unanimously approved by car owners (19 for, 0 against). Our drivers are to be congratulated for approving specifications that will lead to much lower engine costs, which will enable more potential drivers to join this exciting division.

Along with the current specifications we now have three standard engine options:-

1. Californian Lightning Sprint – This alignment with the USA specs enable people to import existing cars from the USA, which run standard 1000cc or 1200cc motorcycle engines which can be either chain driven or differential driven. These types of car are coming to Australia in big numbers at the moment (mainly in Queensland). They have already claimed three feature races in the last year and setting the fastest lap times in two of the last three meetings held in Queensland.

2. V6 Mitsubishi – NSW have adopted the current South Australian V6 Engine Specifications. These stock motors are also gaining in popularity around Australia.

3. Toyota 4AGE 20V – These engines have 180hp in standard form and are now being run in six cars in the Melbourne Mini Sprint division.

During the club meeting, one of the members asked “what is the intended performance level for the 4AGE” (i.e. to be slower than existing engines / same as existing engines / or faster than existing engines). The committee advised:- “that the intention is to have the 4AGE, V6 and Californian lightning sprint options to have parity with the existing engines”.

With a unanimous vote, it is a great sign that this direction has been embraced by car owners / drivers. The new specifications will be on www.nswlightningsprints.com shortly.

The door is open for all cars that meet these specifications and also obtain the appropriate insurance. NSW Lightning Sprints welcome cars from all states including Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia also USA & New Zealand.
