Willy Evernham continues to dominate SpeedSTR field at Shenandoah Speedway

The Weikel Racewear SpeedSTR series was on hand at the Shenandoah Speedway for their final pavement race of the season. Coming into the Shenandoah event 16 year old and Slingshot graduate Nick Pecko held a comfortable 107 point lead over second place Billy VanInwegen and 133 over Willy Evernham with only 2 races remaining. The Shenandoah event would prove to be a pivotal race in the championship standings.

The STR's again would set their feature event through a 10 lap shootout presented by Fragola Performance Systems. Doug Rose in his #95 Flurer Machine and Tool STR would jump out to the lead over pole sitter Steve Hicks and would lead the majority of the event, but with 2 laps remaining the only caution flag of the evening would come out as the second place runner of Billy VanInwegen would make contact with Rose sending him spinning to the infield. Willy Evernham of Mooresville, NC would inherit the lead and take full advantage of it by coming home with the victory and gaining the maximum qualifying points followed by Gary Hieber and Steve Hicks.

With the victory in the Fragola Shootout, Willy Evernham would find himself starting on the outside of the front row. Steve Hicks of Doylestown, PA would bring the field to the green flag in his Cenco Heating Oil USA 1. Evernham who has been dominating the STR series with a recent win at Oswego and a runner up finish at Selinsgrove showed his #9 STR was the car to beat at Shenandoah as well. Gary Hieber, the USAC pavement specialist of Langhorne, PA would dog Evernham for the entire 20 lap feature. The hard charger of the race was Billy VanInwegen of Sparrow Bush, NY who started in the rear of the field and would battle his way, via the outside groove, all the way to a solid third position. "Mr. Consistency" Nick Pecko would chauffer his #42 NEP Wireless STR to a fourth place finish, followed by Wall Stadium's superstar Danny Bohn now from Mooresville, NC would round out the top five.

Coming into the evening's event, VanInwegen, Evernham, and Rose all had a chance in catching Pecko for the point lead but they also new things had to go their way in order to have any chance, they knew they needed to gain maximum points. Evernham did just that earning the maximum 175 points (25 qualifying and 150 feature) and now is within only 67 points of Pecko. The battle is on for the 2008 STR points championship at the Grandview Speedway next Saturday night.
