Nick Pecko Captures SpeedSTR Championship with Grandview Speedway Victory.
The Weikel Racewear SpeedSTR series season finale was at Grandview Speedway with a tight point race up for grabs. Nick Pecko of Vandling, PA headed into Grandview with a slim 67 point lead over the hot Willy Evernham of Mooresville, NC. W. Evernham had won 2 of the last 3 events with a second in the other and was on a tear.
The Bilstein Shootout would be the first point event to hit the track, W. Evernham would start 3rd and point leader Pecko would start the event 5th. Pecko wasted no time adding to his point lead by immediately jumping up to the second position after the first couple laps and would settle in behind leader Steve Hicks of Doylestown, PA, but with just two circuits remaining Hicks would hook a rut with his USA1 and spin. Pecko would collect the maximum points with the Shootout victory as W. Evernham struggled to an 8th place finish.
Billy VanInwegen of Sparrow Bush, NY would lead the Weikel Racewear STR field to the green flag for the feature event but it was "Nitro" Nick Pecko taking the lead by turn one with his #42 NEP Wireless/Cube Auto Supply NAPA SpeedSTR. Pecko would not look back as he cruised to victory and the STR championship. Rich Tobias, the founder of the STR series was behind the wheel of his famed #17 and would close on Pecko in the final laps but would have to settle for second. VanInwegen would bring his #23 home third followed by Grandview Speedway's all time feature winner and recent winner of the BPG Freedom 76er, Craig VonDohren who was behind the wheel of Doug Rose's #95 STR. Andy Burkhart would round out the top five.
Weikel Racewear SpeedSTR Championship Notes:
The STR series competes on both the pavement and the dirt surfaces making this Series Championship unique and prestigious, the series competed at 8 different tracks, 6 on dirt and 2 on pavement. The driving talent that it takes to be competitive on both surfaces in the same car is impressive and admirable. This series is an excellent avenue for future stars to hone their driving talents and gain substantial recognition.
Nick Pecko who has been exceptionally consistent throughout the 2008 season knew he had to step it up coming into Grandview as Willy Evernham had closed in over the last three events in order to secure the STR Championship. Although Evernham did not have the night he had hoped for it would not matter, because Pecko left NO points on the table as he collected the maximum available.
Nick Pecko would also take home the Mr. Dirt honors followed by VanInwegen and W. Evernham. Willy Evernham would earn the Mr. Pavement title followed by USAC Pavement Star Gary Hieber and Pecko.
