I use both, and don't oil either one... Just clean and oil the K&N once a month... I think the outerwears keep more dirt out of the filter though... Using the outerwears my filter is still red after a month of racing...

My experience has not been the same as C&G racing. We have found Outerwares a whole lot better than nothing, but over 12 years of trying both, they are not nearly as effective as a foam prefilter. I expect his experience with foam prefilters is related to not oiling them - the foam prefilters definitely need to be lightly oiled to be really effective. A lightly oiled foam prefilter has, for us, proven much more effective than an Outerwares nylon sock, although their performance can be improved a little with some filter oil, too - it just hasn't been worth the effort, since the oiled foam prefilter worked so much better. Regardless of the filter material used, we prefer the Klotz fabric filter oil to the foam filter oil, and use it on both the main fabric filter and on the foam prefilter. Your experience may differ; we just found it easier to get the coverage we wanted (and easy control of the coverage as it was sprayed on) using the red fabric filter oil.

I feel the same and you have to clean and oil both every weekend. no matter what car. take a clean 5 gallon pail and fill it with clean water and soap then let the filters soak and then move them around in there to get the water to pass back and forth. you will find that the water becomes realy dirty ive sean this in both my 270 and 600.

I keep crushing my K&N filters on the track each week, and it makes the metal filter screen break into little pieces, it is either from my chain tensioner or my elbow hitting it. I was wondering if anyone had any luck running a uni filter (foam) with a rubber/urethane flange instead of the K&N, or if anyone had any tips on how to keep the K&N from getting crushed every week. Thanks...BTW, I run the K&N with an outerwear, seems to work fine otherwise.

The outerwears do restrict air flow ..... this was a fact on my superflow 110 doing kart stuff .... Only use an oiled (WD-40) foam prefilter under dusty track conditions. What we used to do was get a few foams oiled up and in ziplock baggies ..... keep changing them throught the evening as needed. If it's a big money race or you are time trialing the the ultimate setup is whats called a qualifying filter ....... A K&N with only the screen an no fabrick ..... Throw your oiled foam over the and let the motor eat. As far as the uni-filters we use them on our grass drag sleds with good results ..... The only thing is they don't "straighten" the air out as well as a K&N.

Whats the setup your running? I haven't really had any problems with crushing the air cleaner...
I have an RTS w/ CR motor... from the cylinder, vortex reeds, stock straight boot, big bell 40.5 carb., and K&N RB-0910 (bout 5" long)... The whole setup puts the air cleaner edge around the back edge of the motor mounts...
