FOGG WAITS UNTIL SEASON FINALE TO SCORE IMPRESSIVE FIRST WIN
It was a night for exciting micro-sprint racing, Halloween festivities and quarter midget exhibition racing to bring down the curtain on the 2008 Airport Speedway season.
A Halloween costume judging found 2 ½ year old Jeremy DiSanto the first place winner. Next, thirteen quarter midgeters from the Blackbird Quarter Midget Club staged a 10 lap shoot-out on the 1/8th mile oval with 13 year old Cody Jordan the winner. It was then time for the micro-sprint wheel twisters to put the final touches on the 2008 racing season.
Dr. Luke Fogg, the racing chiropractor, from Woodstown, NJ scored an impressive victory in the 270cc feature over the hard charging Drew Boyce. Starting on the pole, Fogg led all 20 laps (laps shortened for time) to win his first feature in over two years. The race became a “nail-biter” from the start as Boyce tried everything he knew to get the jump on the red and white #19 of Fogg but to no avail. With 24 cars racing the tight 1/8 mile oval, there were numerous yellow flags and a 10 car pile-up at the head of the main straight before even one lap was officially scored. One of the retirees was the popular Ken Andreas, caught up in the melee. Mandato, Palmai and Morrill were also DNFs. A great run was turned in by Gage Green as he found his way from an 18th start to a 3rd place finish. Also, Roland Saxton Jr managed a top 5 finish from his 11th place on the starting grid. The unofficial 270cc Champion appears to be Ken Andreas. Confirmation will be announced following all point/score checking.
The closest Championship race was centered in the 600cc class where the quartet of Luke Thomas, Bill Thomas, Brian Radcliff and Bob DeVault took turns winning features throughout the season and tightening up the point totals each week. Tonight’s finish had Radcliff the 600cc winner after a duel with DeVault and Bill Thomas. Luke Thomas who started 9th could only muster a 7th place finish, but by quick number crunching, appears to have enough points to take the unofficial Championship crown. The first yellow was displayed on lap 14 for the Shane Lewis spin in turn 2. Shaking out as a Radcliff/DeVault race through most of the event, DeVault made a “last ditch” unsuccessful attempt to get by Radcliff as the two powered off turn 4 and headed for the checkered flag. Bill Thomas, Jack Conover and Jerry Allen rounded out the top five.
The 125cc feature had Brittany Whitesall and Shane Braxton sharing the front row. As Whitesall came off turn 2, her car appeared to slow just enough for point leader Phil Durham and Evan Krautwald and Braxton to get by. Jim Pollard looped his machine in turn 4 while on lap 9, Heather Colbert’s machine developed mechanical problems on the backstretch retiring the #67 for the night. On the restart, Braxton got by Krautwald and set his sights on catching Durham. By lap 16, Durham was in heavy traffic while Braxton was moving closer. On the final trip around the oval, Durham made contact with another car off turn 4 getting the #32 slightly out of control but managing to hold off Braxton for the win. Durham appears to be the unofficial 2008 Champion in the 125cc class until all point tallies are checked.
Alex Swift and the #90 machine appears to have held off all challengers for the unofficial Championship of the 250cc Stock class as he notched another win over Cameron Bellinger. Barry Pollard and Phil Durham engaged in a heated battle early for the number one spot taking the positions 1 and 2 on lap 2. Bellinger joined in the third spot in the early going. Lew Schwander spun in turn 4 on lap 4 and three laps later, Pollard retired with mechanical woes. On the restart, Swift regained the lead bringing Bellinger, Durham and Garrison along. Kody Holand brought out the yellow on lap 16. The restart kept Swift in the lead and first under the checker.
The Juniors race was cut to a 10 lapper with Kelli Matherly taking the win as a hard charging Glenn Frye Jr kept the pressure on at the line. Nandi Palmai and Jake Allen tangled in turn 3 on lap 2 both having to retire their machines. Timothy Colbert took the win for the 125cc powered cars. This one looks like Glenn Frye Jr will take the unofficial Juniors Championship until the final points are tabulated. It’s been a good season for the Juniors as several drivers are already scheduled to join the ranks of the regular 125 and 250 Stock classes in 2009.
