Leesport, Pa. - August 8 - The birth of a child can be a motivating experience. Perhaps it's the added responsibility of becoming a parent, or maybe it's just because some extra money is needed for diapers and formula. Whatever the reason, his daughter's birth certainly provided a spark for Mike Glass.

The Myerstown, Pa. racer has four feature wins since daughter Kayla was born two months ago. And Monday night, with the Reading Fair serving as the backdrop, Glass won a biggie; enough to keep Kayla in fresh diapers for the next several months.

At the annual Nostalgia Nationals presented by the Reading Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society, Glass engaged in a terrific duel for the lead with Kyle Rohner, then held off a fast closing Matt Carman to win the $1,000 top prize in the 40-lap main event for the All Star Slingshots.

By virtue of his first and third place finishes in Sunday's two rounds of qualifying heat races, Glass earned the right to start on the pole for Monday's A-Main. Rohner started on the outside of row one and, when Glass caught a rut in turn one and bobbled a bit, Rohner snatched the lead on the first trip around the tight but racy little oval.

The first half of the 40-lapper belonged to Rohner, as he pulled away from Glass and the rest of the stellar 28-car field. Rohner deftly navigated through the lapped traffic during a long stretch of green flag racing, but a yellow with 23 complete would change the complexion of the event.

One lap after the restart, Glass launched off the bottom of turn two with a full head of steam, drawing even with Rohner as they charged down the backstretch. Glass forged ahead in turns three and four to grab the lead, but another caution period with 26 tours complete allowed Rohner to regroup.

With just thirteen laps remaining, Rohner surged past Glass to reclaim the top spot. When Paul Ennes rolled his Slingshot onto its side, producing a red flag stoppage with ten to go, it was Glass who regrouped and mounted yet another attack on the leader. Ennes was unhurt in the crash and, in fact, restarted the race and finished thirteenth, one lap behind the leaders.

As the race resumed, Glass darted past Rohner to take command once more. Matt Carman, the 2008 Nostalgia Nationals winner, rode along in third place for almost the entire distance. Now, with the laps winding down, he turned up the wick and closed in on the two cars in front of him. Glass, Rohner, and Carman ran nose-to-tail until Carman slipped under Rohner for the runner-up spot with three laps left to run.

One final caution, with two to go, set up a green/white/checkered finish. Carman attempted to duck under the Nicholas Powder Coating/Kim's Kreations No. 3n, but Glass repelled the challenge and went on to win his first Nostalgia Nationals at the Reading Fair.

Carman finished a strong second, with Rohner nursing a bent tie rod on his car as he crossed the line for third place money. Bill Weaver and Marc Daniels finished fourth and fifth.

In the two rounds of qualifying heats held on Sunday, winners included Oley's Brett Bieber, Rohner, Glass, Weaver, Matt Miller, Joe Bodenschatz, Kurt Bettler, and Branden Clauss. A pair of B-Mains were held on Monday evening, with Travis Bieber and New York's Charlie Lawrence picking up the victories.

Rohner earned an extra $100 for winning Monday's Cash Dash, beating all of the heat race winners in a 12-lap affair.

Bonus money offered in the A-Main was gobbled up by the following drivers: the Warren Ruffner Memorial Awards went to C.R. Hill as the last car running in the A-Main and Matt Dealaman, who was the Hard Charger of the race. Dealaman advanced 13 positions during the 40-lapper, finishing 12th after starting 25th.

Strapped In Racing Magazine put up extra cash to celebrate its ninth anniversary season, and it went to Branden Clauss for his ninth place finish.

Racers Roundtable.com and RPM New & Used Slinger Parts offered bonus cash to the driver who was leading the feature race at the halfway point (lap 20). That money went to Kyle Rohner.

A total of 35 All Star Slingshot teams entered this year's Nostalgia Nationals.

Tyler Johnston, from Nepanoch, NY, lead wire to wire to win the 20-lap Junior Slingshot National Tour event on Sunday. Johnston, the current point leader on the Junior National Tour, outgunned fellow front row starter Louden Reimert to grab the early lead, as Reimert fell back into a battle with Jared Zionkowski and Alex Shaffer.

While Zionkowski stayed close, Johnston was in full control of the race at all times, blasting to the victory by 2.2 seconds over Zionkowski, Chris Kurtz, Kyle Gruber, and Abbey Price.

On Monday, as a prelude to the Slingshot events, Karts from the Stock 370 Class at Shellhammer's Speedway were featured in a 20-lap race. Logan Klawitter, from Harrisburg, Pa., won the entertaining event that was highlighted by numerous lead changes among several drivers. In the end, Klawitter outdueled Reading's Kevin Miller for the win, with Rob Sentner finishing third. Ed and Ryann Sheetz completed the top five.
