Path Valley Speedway Park FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spring Run, PA. 17262 Dated: 13 June 2008
Track 717-349-7111 or Weekdays 717-349-0098, 717-426-2910
Hershey and Dicely Top Path Valley Sprint Winners
Friday the Thirteenth took a sideswipe at the Path Valley Speedway with heavy rain to open and close the program and plenty of crashes and flips to thrill the fans.
Joey Hershey outran a good field in the full size 305 Sprints and Hyper Racing’s Mike Dicely picked up the win in the 600 Sprints. Steve Whary returned to victory lane in the 270 Sprints and the Sidewinders 1000cc Sprint win went to Ryan Greth.
Because of the late starting hour after rain falling still at 7 p.m. the Mini Stocks and Thunder Cars graciously agreed to race double features next Friday night for the Russell Tire Race Night. They will share the program with the Late Models and the Legends and both of the regular weekly sprint classes for eight full feature programs that night.
Just a little luck and a career full of racing skills helped Mike Dicely of Hyper Chassis to his 600 Sprints win as he first won the first of four heat races and then drew a zero inversion pill to start at the front of the full field. Past track repeat champion Jimmy Brookens threatened Dicely’s lead until lap eight when Brookens went off under a black flag for a broken water line. On the restart Jake Murphy pulled alongside Dicely at the end of lap eight but could not continue the momentum to pass and by lap eleven Dicely had lapped cars to protect his lead. The front five finishers were Dicely, Murphy, Tom Kohler, Tim Glatfelter, and Nick Saner and the heat winners were Dicely, Keith McIntyre, Nick Saner and Brookens.
The top feature, for the 305 Sprints, got off to a rocky start on lap four when Mike Wagner flipped onto his wing on turn four. Mike Freet continued to lead from his second place start until lap eight when, as he encountered Jake Waters at the rear of the pack, Joey Hershey managed to pass him through turns two and into three. On the very next lap Freet passed Hershey but could not reclaim the lead as the #98 of Wes Zimmerman flipped upside down between turns three and four with Todd Spangler’s #33 to hold it down for a red flag before the lap was completed. With Hershey in the lead on the last completed lap, he continued to lead for the restart and Freet tried desperately to pass him again, but at the finish the front five were still Hershey, Freet, Tyler Bear, Craig Laudermilch and Brent Comp.
Last year’s champion, Donnie Hendershot, led the Sidewinders by a full turn when he looped his #7 completely around on lap 12 coming out of turn two for the first caution of the event. That put Ryan Greth into the lead with Jason Morrison right behind him and the second and final caution when Rohan Beasley lost a wheel did not provide the chance Morrison needed so Greth took the win with Morrison, Denny Landvater, Aaron Spahr and Tim Mertz completing the front five. Five of the big field were eliminated during the heat races that Mertz and Sean Campbell won.
Steve Whary took the 270 Sprints lead from Jason Houtz on lap two and won by virtue of his lead under caution when a steady rain began on a lap 18 restart. Lapped cars became a factor on lap 10 and Houtz reclaimed second place from Brian Marriott at the end, but a red flag for a spinning pile of vehicles including Colby Dice and Levi Peck on lap 18 stalled the racing and when Brian Marriott flipped onto his wing in turn four on the second attempt to restart lap 18 the rain became a steady downpour forcing the final checkered flag of the night.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown.
