There were two feature winners at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway on Saturday, but the original plan was to have seven by night's end. A steady rain that began around 8 p.m. forced a premature conclusion to the big card of Micro-Sprint racing, wiping out the regularly scheduled, five-division program.
Prior to the precipitation, Steven Drevicki (Sportsman class) and Kevin Garman (125cc) triumphed in features that were postponed by rain on May 17.
Drevicki led from the pole as the first 19 tours of the Sportsman race ran caution-free. When the yellow finally appeared, it was for second-place Jason Hehnly, who spun in turn four.
The restart with six to go proved to be no problem for Drevicki, the 2007 Rookie of the Year in the Sportsman class. The teenager from Reading, PA sprinted away from new runner-up Billy Logeman, who was left to battle with Kenny Miller.
As Drevicki flew under Tim Gehret's checkered flag to win his second in a row, Logeman held off Miller for second. Dwayne Mathias and Jeff Hughes completed the top five.
Garman's victory in the 125cc main event came with a higher degree of difficulty. For starters, when he arrived at the shop to prepare his No. 87 for the evening of competition, Garman discovered a faulty water pump seal in his micro's powerplant. Approximately 3 1/2 hours later, after disassembling his spare engine to remove its water pump so it could replace the pump with the leaky seal.
Garman rushed to the track, and was ready when the green waved to begin the make-up feature. He trailed polesitter Nathan Weidman for a few circuits, before Bret Habecker took the runner-up spot away.
Weidman's fast pace ended with nine down when his Nanny's Catering No. 25 suddenly slowed and turned toward the infield, where Nathan parked it due to mechanical issues. That handed the lead to Habecker, who set sail and appeared to be set for his first win of the season.
Habecker's smooth run suffered a crushing blow when he caught one of the infield delineators in turn four with 11 laps to go. The delineator was knocked onto the racing surface, bringing out the yellow and forcing Habecker to the rear for causing the slow-down period.
Garman was the recipient of Habecker's misfortune, and the Elizabethtown, PA lead-foot made the most of his opportunity. Dave "the Flying Falini" motored into second and closed on the leader just as a light rain began to fall.
With the track quickly turning into an ice hockey rink, Garman carefully kept his car out front. Falini stuck his nose inside the leader on a couple of occasions, but had to back out of the throttle each time because his Viper Chassis No. 74F became "twitchy" due to the slick conditions.
Scott Gantert, running third on lap 22, got loose as he entered turn three. Matt Budd, the fourth-place driver, tapped Gantert and stuttered to a halt, bringing out the yellow. With the rain intensifying, the checkered was also displayed at that point, giving Garman the first Micro-Sprint victory of his career. Since none of the cars had completed the 22nd trip around the clay when the caution light blinked on, the running order reverted back to lap 21.
The top five after 21 laps read like this: Garman, Falini, Gantert, Budd, and Brian Sholley.
The lengthy shower left Lanco's officials with no choice but to cancel the rest of the program.
This Saturday, June 21, the final two features from May 17 will start things off at 6 p.m. The 250cc Four-Strokes and the 270cc Two-Strokes will complete the show from May 17, then a complete menu of heats, consolations, and 25-lap features will take place for the Sportsman, 125cc, 250cc Four-Stroke, 270cc Two-Stroke, and 600cc Micro-Sprints. The cameras of Blue Ridge Cable 11 will be on hand to record the five regularly scheduled main events. The entire racing program will be sponsored by RTS Chassis.
Gates open at 3:30, with warm-ups at 5 p.m. As mentioned, the first of two make-up features will take the green at 6:00. Adult General Admission tickets are just $8.00, with discounts for Senior Citizens and students. Kids between the ages of 6 and 12 are admitted for just $2.00, and children under the age of 6 are free. And, as always, there is FREE parking at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway.
