Fedder Scores 100 Late Model Wins
In a landmark race for a local star, Tim Fedder roared to his 100th career win in the Late Models Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park while Gary Newell in the Mini Stocks won his first feature ever in a night notable for eight full features completed in four and a half hours.
Past repeat champion Jim Brookens got a rare chance to start on the pole in the 600 Sprints and it was almost a foregone conclusion that he led all the way to the checkers. Geremey Sheaffer won his heat race in the INEX sanctioned Central PA Legends and then came from far back in the field to win his feature, and in the 270 Sprints Sean McAndrews raced out of fifth place to win.
In the local stock cars the Russell Tire Race Night wins went to four different drivers as the teams made up rained out features from June 13 and then the night’s regular features. Mark Grove won the makeup in the Thunder Cars and Ronnie Garlock won the Mini Stock makeup, and then in the night’s regular races Gary Dehart won in the Thunder Cars and Newell won his first ever in the Mini Stocks.
The full size PA 305 Sprints and the Sidewinders will be on hand next Friday night for the Keystone Siding Race Night.
The charmingly modest Brookens can’t usually estimate how many features he has won, but Tyler Walton was close on his rear bumper until the first caution on lap seven and then on the restart Robert Kendall took over second and continued to follow Brookens around the smooth quarter mile. The front five finishers were Brookens, Kendall, Walton, Jake Murphy and Brad Cox and before Nick Saner won the ten-lap consi the heat winners were Brie Hershey for her first heat win at Path Valley, Brookens, Walton and Kendall.
Chase Billet from a second place start led the first nine laps of the Late Models and then on lap ten Tim Fedder who had been in second behind him since lap three managed to find a smooth groove down the front stretch and got past him on the outside line around turn one. That left Fedder to pick his own line as the race went non-stop and finished in about four minutes with Jerry Bard, Steve Bailor and Scott Daniels completing the front five behind Fedder and Billet. The heat winners were also Fedder and Billet. Bard started last as handicap for winning the race before.
In exciting Legends action Geremey Sheaffer worked his way into third place from eighth on the third attempt to complete the first lap and then passed Jason Ewing for second place on lap four and took the lead from Nathan Fisher through laps five and six. Past winner Reed Salony worked his way from 12th to second by lap 16 and nipped at Sheaffer to the finish, pulling alongside twice, but Sheaffer won by half a length with Salony, Ewing, Bill Diehl and Andy Lupfer filling out the front five. The heats went to Scott Houdeshell and Sheaffer.
Sean McAndrews came from fifth place to pass pole starter Levi Peck on lap four and then amid lapped cars to lead Brian Marriott to the checkers by as much as two full turns. The front five were McAndrews, Marriott, Tom Tice, Peck and Steve Whary and the heats went to Colby Dice and Marriott.
Gary Dehart led the Mini Stock makeup feature from the rain marred show on June 13 until lap 14 when Ronnie Garlock pulled even on the outside line on lap 14 and completed his pass coming out of turn two as Gary Newell raced alongside Dehart. At the finish Garlock won by less than a car length ahead of Dehart and then Newell, Frank Gordon and Dave Friedrich. Then Newell started on the pole for the night’s regular feature and raced away as Dehart and Kevin Thomas battled for second place. After a lap seven caution Dehart passed Newell on the inside of turn one and Thomas got past Newell on lap eight, but then Thomas and Dehart went side by side through lap 13 and on lap 14 Newell hugged the inside of turns three and four to emerge in the lead again. Ronnie Garlock took second from Dehart on lap 17 but Newell stayed just a bumper ahead of him to the finish, using a lapped Dave Bivens to protect his win. The front five for the second feature were Newell, Garlock, Dehart, Jeremy Ott and Frank Gordon and Thomas and Dehart won the heats.
Mark Grove started the makeup Thunder Car feature from the pole and led all the way with Eric Seibert and then Denny Scofield attempting to pass out of second place, but at the finish the front five were Grove, Scofield, Josh Walstrum, Seibert and Mike Cordero. In the night’s second Thunder Car thriller Gary Dehart and Terry Smith raced away after a lap seven caution when Bill Kennedy slammed into and onto the back stretch wall. Smith pulled along side at the end of lap 11 and again at the start of lap 15 but never completed a pass and at the finish Dehart, Smith, Grove, Scofield and Randy Stull made up the front five while the heats went to Kennedy and Dehart.
