ELWELL PICKS UP TWO FEATURE WINS
POLLARD AND THOMAS ARE ALSO GREETED IN VICTORY LANE
It was a "Todd Elwell night" as the New Jersey chauffeur grabbed feature wins in 250 Stock and 270 classes.
It was evident from his winning two Heat races, that Elwell was positioning himself for at least one and maybe two feature victories. His first came in the 250 Stock event. Starting on the pole, Elwell jumped to the lead followed by multiple winner Alex Swift. It was not going to be easy for Elwell as Swift kept the pressure on thru most of the early laps. At the crossed flags, Elwell had pulled out to a comfortable lead. On lap 16, Phil Durham brought out the caution flag and the restart tightened the field. Again, Swift's #90 was on Elwell's bumper and made a desperate attempt to get by. Elwell's car, however, was set perfectly and finished ahead of Swift and Barry Pollard. Cameron Bellinger and Jim Garrison, III competed the top five.
In the 270 feature, Elwell had to contend with another #90 machine, this one piloted by Ken Andreas. During the early laps, it was Elwell, Andreas and Drew Boyce. During the 16th circuit, Andreas got by Elwell thru traffic. However, Elwell powered right back to regain the lead. On the 24th lap, Boyce and Andreas tangled in turn 4 bringing out the yellow and setting the field up for a Green, White, Checker finish. At the checkered flags, it was Elwell, Merriman and Buckwalter. Andeas and Boyce had to settle for 8th and 10th respectively.
Jim Pollard saw his first '08 victory as he piloted from a seventh starting spot to claim the win over Rich Mellor and Brittany Whitesall. Corissa Matherly and Heather Colbert brought the field to the Green flag. Quickly, it was Shane Braxton taking the lead with Phil Durham in pursuit. On lap 8, Colbert caught the berm in turn 2 and rolled her #67. Restarting, it was Braxton, Durham and Mellor nose to tail. On lap 12, the leaders got together with both coming to a stop. Durham was able to restart, but Braxton's mount was a DNF. The incident put Mellor in the lead followed by Pollard. In the closing laps, Pollard was able to get a run on Mellor and take the win.
The 600 feature saw a full field of the "ground pounders" take the Green flag. On the front row it was Luke Thomas and Bob DeVault. Before the completion of lap one, Jon Holmquist brought out the yellow for a spin in turn 2. The restart was no better as a multi-car tangle occurred in turn 3 sidelining the current point leader Bill Thomas. Angelo Mercado moved to the second spot behind Thomas with Glenn Heverin in pursuit. On lap 13, Mercado spun in turn 1. Also, Ed Wilberg and Jim Tippin went around. Tippin's machine received sufficient damage to send him to the infield. The restart put Heverin on the back bumper of Thomas along with DeVault within striking distance. Another yellow flew on lap 23 prompting a Green, White, Checker finish. Thomas was up to the restart challenge holding off Heverin for the win.
The Junior Sprinter's feature had two new winners in Victory Lane. Kody Holand took the checkers for the 250 powered machines and Tim Colbert championed the 125's, both for the first time. Glenn Frye, Jr suffered thru two flips and still managed to bring home his #12 racer in second place at the line.
