Mertz takes a dominant win and regains the point lead in the Hyper Cup
On a dry slick track, no one expected Tim Mertz to do the unthinkable. On an all or nothing roll of the dice, Tim made the decision to try and run the top on the opening lap and in doing so found the fast way around the lap one bottleneck propelling his mount from his tenth place starting position towards the front of the field.
John Robertson was the only Sidewinder to get upside down when his throttle stuck on the first lap leading to a collision with Gary Funck in turn one.
By lap 7 Tim had pulled out a handy lead only to have it negated by a caution. The pack was set to pounce. All the heavy hitters were in place, only to have most of them caught up in a restart entanglement in turn two. With more cautions to come, Tim remained in the “hot seat” leading the hungry pack around the excellently prepared racing surface.
On every restart Mertz was able to remain in control and he crossed the line in front of Arron Spahr, Brent Marks, Shawn Seifert and Chad Hough rounded out the top five.
It was the first win for Tim Mertz and his Suzuki powered RTS Sidewinder at Trail-Way and his 2nd ever Sidewinder win, the other win coming 4 weeks ago at Path Valley. The in form Mertz will definitely be one to watch in the chase for the coveted Hyper Cup.
In victory lane Tim extended his thanks to “ Terry Schaffer and Randy West at RTS for all of their help, Mertz's Moving, Allison Door Sales, Don Guhl from Guhl Motors for the faultless fuel injection conversion, Sidewinder Sprints for the effort in putting this class together and Trailways for keeping the track in pretty good condition. I would also like to thank all the contingency sponsors for supporting the Sidewinders. Also a big thank you to my dad for his tireless effort and to Ron and Joe for helping every week.”

This Weeks Question;
Q. Now that corn planting season is over, will we see the Hendershot team at Trail-Way this week to help shake down their 600cc car for the $3K to win 600cc speed week show?
A. Apparently there was still more corn to plant on the farm and team Hendershot was MIA
Next Weeks Question;
Q. After a bad night at the races for the Keystone Siding sponsored Funck team with all three cars ( two Sidewinders, one 600cc) receiving damage, can the Funck team rebound next week and put all three cars back in the truck unscathed?
