This question I am sure has been asked 1000 times! How much oil do you put in the tranny of a 270?

Make sure you use gear oil and not motor oil. I have had really good luck with lucas 90w gear oil, it's not too expensive and it seems to work great.

you shouldnt use gear oil in the bottom end they were not designed to us that heavy of oil. stick wit a good engine oil no thicker than 20w-50 and change it every race if use a heavier oil you also take away power from the motor amsoil is one of the best or motul makes a good oil also

change it every race? what no and takes away H.P. yea ok I'd rather loose some power than lose my $2,000 trans.

if you change it every race your deffinatly not gonna blow it and if you ever notice you dont have a clutch flat shifting jams the gears if you dont have good oil in it you will destroy your $2,000 tranny real quick

Im sorry I mean the price of labor and stuff. Isn't it $900 for a total trans pack? and labor is a couple hundred and while it is apart your prob gonna have the crank bearings replaced and if everything seizes you can take out the cases at $250 a peice. so it onl;y comes to $1,500 to $2,000.

As far as the amount it can vary do to different clutch covers, clutch hubs, split cases, solid 5th gear these will all affect the amount of oil to run in your engine so what works for one may not work for another. If you look on the right side of your motor on the clutch cover you will be able to find a 10mm bolt with a phillips head this is the transmission oil "check" hole it is idiot proof but is mostly over looked as being nothing at all. When filling your transmission remove the bolt and fill untill the oil starts to run out (the engine must be level for this to work properly) . It is ok to put a couple of oz's extra in, it will just blow out the over-flow. As for a split case consult your engine builder everyone seems to have a different amount. A bone stock engine on the bike holds 650cc of fluid, (1 quart = 946cc), so you can see there is quite a bit of loss from the clutch basket and clutch pack being removed so you definitly need more then what honda recommends. If you use the "check" hole it does not matter what combination you have, your oil level will be exactly where the enginener's who designed the engine want it to be. As for the type yes you can use conventional motor oil, 10w-40 only if you do use it and it cannot be the "energy conservitive" type either you can tell if it is that type by a star stamp on the bottle. I would highly recommend not using it. Use a good quality name brand two stroke transmission oil that has been formulated specificlly for the use in two strokes. I would recomend bell ray 80-90w.

Do not use motor oil, use gear oil or you will ruin your tranny, cases, etc. I would use 90w. The reason the oil needs to be so heavy is bacause when we are constantly going around a corner thin oil goes to one side of the motor and not on the gears. thick heavy oil will stick on the gears when going threw a corner. If your gears turn blue and the teeth get rounded out then you are useing the wrong oil. Trust me, I learned the hard way several times. I wouldn't worry about loosing hp, it is min if any loss. Remeber, to finish first, first you must finish.
