Sawyer, Riden and Kohler Lead Path Valley Sprints

Scott Sawyer charged out of Oklahoma to win the open Keystone Siding Race Night feature in 600 Sprints Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park while Tom Kohler won the regular points race in the 600 class.

In the full size economy 305 Sprints George Riden became a repeat winner while the Sidewinders win went to Ryan Greth for the second race in a row and Cody Phillips got his first win and Keystone Siding trophy in the 270 Sprints. In local stock car action Ricky Harper won again in the Mini Stocks and Terry Smith won in the Thunder Cars.

Next Friday night the track will feature Celebrate America Night with the Late Models and Legends cars on hand for a thrilling full night of July 4 racing. The Open feature for 600 Sprints was a preview of the scheduled Monday evening J&K Salvage sponsored PA 600 Sprints Speedweek session at Path Valley featuring open rather than the common PA rules. It featured racers from all over the US and Sawyer came from Broken Arrow OK to repeat his Path Valley visit of about three years ago. He said the most unusual thing at Path Valley was scraping mud off his micro sprint because at home he has only sand and dust to brush away. The Speedweek for 600 Sprints features seven races in eight days at various tracks.

Sawyer won his heat race and got to start second on the front row with a zero pill drawn for inversion. Tim Barrick surged from fifth place to second on the first lap and pulled alongside Sawyer part way through lap four but never managed to complete his pass for the lead as the race went non-stop to the finish. Keith McIntyre took over third on lap four and Kevin Steele finished fourth with Jake Murphy fifth. Andrew Deal won the first heat race but did not finish the feature.

Tom Kohler started third in the regular 600 Sprints points race and passed Keith McIntyre for the lead on a restart of lap four. By lap 12 he had lapped traffic to protect his rear view and despite cautions on laps 19 and 20 he stayed ahead of McIntyre and then Jake Murphy who had started 16 to the finish. Kohler, Jimmy Brookens and McIntyre won the heat races but Brookens was handicapped to start 12 for winning the previous week’s race.

Two red flags for multiple 305 Sprints on their wings slowed that feature but George Riden moved from fifth into second behind Todd Spangler on lap nine and held on to pass Spangler by diving into turn four on lap 18. At the finish Riden, Mike Heckman, Tyler Bear, Spangler and Jim Kennedy filled in the front five. The heat race winners were Mike Freet and Spangler.

Ryan Greth showed off his skill in the Sidewinders by easing his way past all challengers as he came out of twelfth place to win the feature. Tim Mertz led by up to two full turns after lap five but his #17 died on the backstretch on lap nine. By then Greth was in third place and on lap ten he took over the lead from Rich Halter and shortly after began to lap slower cars. Jason Morrison took second place on the final lap, leaving Halter to finish in third. Stanley Fleming and Greth were the heat winners.

Cody Phillips went from the pole to second on the 270 Sprints start and didn’t pass Jim Still for the lead until a lap 13 caution and restart. The front five finishers were Phillips, Still, Tim Mertz, Tom Tice and Nick Gower and Tice, Sean McAndrew and Still won the heats.

Ricky Harper started on the Mini Stock pole, survived a car falling apart alongside him in turn one on lap 14 for the only caution, and finished well ahead of Gary Dehart and then Shawn Moore. Dehart and Harper won the heat races.

In similar style Terry Smith led all the way with only one caution in the Thunder Cars as Denny Scofield, Mark Grove and Eric Seibert took turns aiming for second. The front five finishers were Smith, Scofield, Seibert, Josh Walstrum and Bill Kennedy and the heat winner was Smith.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. From March to October, Path Valley races stock cars and sprints Friday nights and AMA bikes or Strictly Stock junkyard cars Saturday nights.

The phone number at the track is 717-349-7111. For information on the 2007 schedule and rules, race teams and fans can consult the website at www.pathvalley.com or they can email Two Wheel Promotions at twp@pathvalley.com.
