BELLINGER, B. THOMAS AND BOYCE WIN FEATURES
RAIN KOs 125 FEATURE
The night’s features were run off in quick succession in an effort to beat the incoming rain. Even the regular Victory Lane interviews and photos were eliminated. It wasn’t enough, however, as a brief but persistent shower stopped the last feature for the 125s before it could get underway.
The 250 Stocks led off the night’s events with Cameron Bellinger on the pole. Bellinger got a jump on the field at the drop of the Green Flag. Barry Pollard quickly fell in behind Bellinger. The first yellow was displayed for the #32 of Phil Durham’s unscheduled stop in turn 4 on the first lap. As racing resumed, it was Bellinger, Pollard and Swift equally spaced. Another yellow on lap 10 sidelined Lew Schwander’s machine. On the restart, the battle for first and second continued between Swift, Pollard and Bellinger. Last week’s winner, Todd Elwell moved from 12th to 4th early and applied a challenge for third from Swift, but to no avail. At the checkered flag, the top four were evenly spaced with Bellinger picking up the win.
Bill Thomas and Jerry Allen anchored the front row of the 600 feature. The caution flag came out quickly for a slowing Angelo Mercado in turn 2. Mercado got his #3 going again and the green flag was once again displayed with Mercado at the rear. The front runners were now Thomas, Bob DeVault, and Allen. On lap 5, Luke Fogg brought out another yellow as he stopped in turn 4. As the field restarted, Jim Tippin and Jim Borthwick tangled in turn 1 with Borthwick laying his #77 on its side. Lap 7 saw Luke Thomas get by DeVault only to have DeVault get the position right back. Several additional yellows plagued the event. Mechanical woes finally sidelined Mercado on lap 22. Two green, white checker circuits were needed to finish the event with Thomas holding on to the #1 spot for the win. DeVault, Luke Thomas, Rick Stief and Bryan Radcliff rounded out the top five.
The 270 feature was all Drew Boyce. Starting from the pole, Boyce was definitely in command throughout the entire 25 laps. Bill Murphy got by Ken Andreas for second during the first circuit. Justin Stillwaggon then brought out the yellow on lap 1 as he got hard into the turn 2 wall and was a DNF. Turn 2 was also calamity corner for Brian Morrill turning over on lap 13. His machine also went to the infield. During the middle circuits, Boyce pulled out a sizeable lead over the competition. Andreas got the fans excited as he dove for and got the second spot from Murphy on the white flag lap finishing just behind winner Boyce. Murphy had to settle for third.
The Juniors had Kelli Matherly and Tyler Tank on the front row. Going down the backstretch, Tank and Matherly touched wheels sending Matherly hard into the wall and ending her night. Nandi Palmai, got the #99 machine over in turn 4 on lap 19 and was a DNF along with Erin DeLong. Another green, white checker flag combination was needed to end the event with Tank winning for the 250s with Zoe Mattis another repeat winner for the 125s.
