Brian Boudreau is Best Boy in 270cc
Mini Sprints at Whip City Speedway

WESTFIELD, MA, June 28 Brian Boudreau started 16th and charged through the field like Paris Hilton charges through Tiffany’s to earn his first victory of the year in the 270cc Mini Sprints at Whip City Speedway. Boudreau’s win came using an untested back-up motor, hastily installed to replace the primary motor which Chernobyled during his heat race.

“We weren’t even sure it was going to run, but we just decided to try it and have some fun and not worry about going for a win,” the 16 year old student at Granby (MA) High School student said. “When we got going, the car was really sticking and I was able to get by quite a few cars on the outside in the first few laps. Then I moved down and was able to pluck one off every lap or so. I think I would have been able to get by Kendall Segar, but the motor in her car blew when I was running in second just behind her. After the restart I was able to open up a good lead, people tell me I won by nearly half a lap.”

The race was a veritable car crusher as 20 cars were slated to take the green flag but 3 did not start and an additional 10 did not finish.

It was the fourth career 270cc win for Boudreau who was without a ride for the first two weeks of the season. He and his family currently have use of the car owned by Richmond Racing and he hopes to be able to make most of the remaining races at The Whip this season.

In the 750 Sportsman, Mini Sprints, it was Groundhog Day and the Bill Murray role was played by Robby Spino. For the second week in a row, Spino won the race by executing a pass with just two laps remaining. The race was marred by a bone jarring crash on the first lap involving points leader Kristin Phillips and William Munro. Phillips’ machine ended up astride the Armco Barrier and sustained major damage and the driver was shaken up but not seriously injured.

Ryan Nicewicz and Brian Peterson have been the only racers to win a Modified Lite feature so far this season at The Whip. This week, Stafford Springs, CT resident Nicewicz picked up victory number four and Peterson claimed the runner-up spot.

Young Ryan Bigelow of Berlin, CT won every thing there was to win in the 600cc Mini Sprints, capturing both his heat and the feature. In fact, he led every lap there was to lead, by running both races in first place from start to finish.

Former Modified Sportsman pilot Jay Haviland of Amenia, NY picked up his second win of the year in the 750c Mini Sprint feature. He made it look easy by leading from green to checker, despite having a less than optimum finish in his heat race.

Talented chauffer R.J. Tufano of West Haven, CT did the only thing he could to improve on his two consecutive runner-up finishes in the 1200cc Mini Sprint: he won the race after staring in P4 and taking the lead on the second lap.

Kelly Ferrell of Chaplin, CT won the Quad 4 Midget race in her family owned classic roadster style Midget. Ferrell, whose 2008 season has included competing on dirt in the Chili Bowl at Tulsa, OK and on pavement with the NEMA Lites at the Waterford Speedbowl in CT, led the race from start to finish.
