April 4th Trail-Way – Sean McAndrew not headed in a flag to flag win.

April 5th Path Valley – Tim Mertz breaks the ice in 2009.

Trail-Way April 4th.

Saturday saw the winds drying out the track after heavy rain all day Friday. The changing winds also bought about a change in victory lane with Sean McAndrew capturing his first Sidewinder Sprints victory breaking Brian Racine’s undefeated streak.

Sean McAndrew started on the pole for the Sidewinder feature event and held on to pick up his first win at Trail-Way Speedway in the Sidewinder class. McAndrew entered lapped traffic with several car lengths of a lead over third starting Jared Hudson.

One lap later, on the 8th lap, McAndrew had a straightaway lead over Hudson. His lead disappeared when the red flag came out for Craig Myers’ flip in turns one and two. McAndrew then had the feature winner from the past two races, Brian Racine, behind him.

On the 19th lap, Racine went under McAndrew, but couldn’t make the pass stick and McAndrew held on for the win. Finishing behind Racine were Chad Hough, Shawn Seifert, and Joe Robertson. McAndrew and Mark Strickler won the heats for the 18 Sidewinders.

The one to watch in the weeks to come is Chad Hough. Chad started 11th and passed 8 cars to take 3rd and will certainly be a threat of victory in the coming weeks.

In victory lane, Sean stated “ A huge thanks to my father, Rick and Jim young for all of their help. We are using a Target Chassis and we are now starting to get it figured out. Obviously we couldn’t be here without our sponsors, Kiski Valley Electric, Target Racing and Lias Tires. And to the sponsors that support the Sidewinders, WeeBee Audio and Video and the other contingency sponors. ” When asked about the difference in the 270’s to the Sidewinders Sean said “ It’s a totally different animal. The power is amazing and the ability to drive the car with the throttle really makes you put your elbows up.”

Path Valley April 5th

Path Valley just can’t take a trick… Weather again caused the Friday night show to be rescheduled for Sunday afternoon where it was all Tim Mertz.

Mertz showing his 2008 Sidewinder Sprints Championship winning form won his heat convincingly and then pulled the 0 pill causing the feature to be lined “straight up”.

Tim Mertz started on the pole and was never seriously threatened as he won the Sidewinder feature event. The race only had one stoppage for an incident between three drivers on the first lap. After the restart
the race went non-stop to the end.

Alex Schanz appeared to have his second 2nd place finish of the year, but he during post race tech inspection it was found that even thou Alex had the correct compound tire, it didn’t have the Sidewinder Stamp causing his technical disqualification. Later Alex explained that they purchased a quantity of tires and had asked for the “Sidewinder tires” and after checking the rest of the tires that it looks like one had unfortunately been supplied to them in error without the required stamp. This was a very tough break for young Alex and the WeeBee team as it looked like they were positioned to finish the days racing with the track points lead.

In victory lane Tim explained “ We are here to try and win the track championship this year and its great getting an early win. The daytime track conditions really made car setup and throttle control the most important factor and obviously the starting position help a lot. I really want to thank WeeBee Audio and Video for getting behind and helping the Sidewinders this year. We look forward to a great season and hope the weather improves so we can get back to the super fast night time action.”

1st 17 – Tim Mertz (1); 2nd 32 – Chad Myers (4): 3rd 10 – Chad Hough (10); 4th 11- Jesse Snyder (8) 5th 14 – Rohan Beasley (7) ; 6th 16M – Craig Myers (9); 7th 81 – Mike Zielonis (6); 8th 92 – Gary Funck (3); 9th 15 – Sean McAndrew (5); 10th 22 – Patrick Roller (12); 11th 1K – Alex Schanz (2)DQ:

Lap leaders - Tim Mertz (1-20)

Heat winners: Mertz and Schanz

A. Not for a lack of trying… Brian almost pulled of a last lap pass to make it a triple.
