DURHAM WINS HIS SECOND 125 FEATURE

We’ll get to the winning story right after we highlight the first of several pre-feature events scheduled for this season at Airport Speedway.

This week’s event was the selecting of the Best Appearing Car. Three cars were chosen to compete for the award. By a standing vote, the fans selected the 3rd, 2nd and winner of the contest. The #7H, 600 class entry, piloted by Bill Thomas took third place. The #90 from the 270cc class, driven to many victories by Ken Andreas came in second and the #3 machine from the 250cc Stock class with Ava Mercado behind the wheel was declared the fan favorite best appearing car.

Now for this week’s race report.

It was a repeat of last week for Phil Durham as he easily won the night’s 125 feature over Evan Krautwald. It was Krautwald and Durham on the front row with Krautwald taking the #10 and the field down the straight-a-way with Durham on his bumper. Durham grabbed the lead from Krautwald on the first round with Shane Braxton quickly moving into third. As Durham stretched his lead, Dana Watkins wasted no time getting by Braxton and hanging on to second place. Durham was disposing of traffic by the 6th circuit. Braxton and Matherly battled for position during lap 9 with Braxton hanging tough and now holding on to second. With 5 laps remaining in the 25 lapper, it was Durham, Braxton, Krautwald and Kostiak who had moved up from his 8th starting spot. Going into the final rounds, however, Krautwald slipped by Braxton and followed Durham across the line. Completing the top five were Heather Colbert and Dana Watkins.

Next to tackle Airport’s clay were the 250cc Stockers. Alex Swift and Cameron Bellinger anchored the front row. Swift thundered out front at the drop of the green flag. Before one lap could be posted, Brett Estep got over in turn 2 bringing out the yellow. The restart had Swift, Bellinger, Elwell and Mercado leading the field. On lap 2, the #32 of Phil Durham came to a halt at the flag stand. Durham retired his machine which evidently had developing trouble from his heat event. Charles Chance and Justin Layton tangled on lap 7. Troubles for Chance continued as his #0 tumbled on lap 10 putting him out of contention. Jeffrey Wills, meanwhile, was moving his #07 from his 7th starting location, carefully thru the field and was now holding 3rd place behind Bellinger and relegating Elwell to fourth. At the checkers, it was Swift by a wide margin over Bellinger with Wills, Elwell and Mercado rounding out the top five.

For the second week in a row, problems following the 600 feature plagued the ground-pounders. Last week’s winner, Luke Thomas, neglected to weigh immediately after the event and was DQd. This week, the top two finishers, Jack Conover and Bill Thomas were DQd for top wing infractions at tech. This turn of events favored Bob DeVault with an unexpected win as he finished in third place under the checkers. Reading the charts at the conclusion of this report will clearly identify the finishing positions of the other competitors in the field. One positive note to report is that for the first time in several weeks, including last year, the 600cc class placed a full field of cars on the track for their feature event.

The 270cc feature could easily be reported as the “yellow flag spectacular”. Your reporter lost track of the number of yellows that ere displayed by flagger, Al Funari. They began before lap one was complete. Ken Andreas led flag to flag with last week’s winner, Drew Boyce in second the entire 25 “painful laps”. As restart after restart took place, some contenders used the occasion to advance their position including newcomer, Eric Mauriello, who moved into fifth place from a 9th place start.

One happy youngster of the Junior class feature was Angelo Bianco. A rookie this year in the class, Angelo came to the micros from a “successful career” in the quarter midgets. In only his second start in the micro ranks, he motored his #86 carefully thru the 12 car field from fifth to a “no doubt about it” first. This new Junior class pilot will surely be a contender for many future wins this season. Finishing out the top five were Kyle Spence, Kelli Matherly, Zoe Matis and Tyler Reinhardt.

More micro-sprint racing on the 1/8th mile oval will be next week, May 2 at 7pm.
