The 4-Cylinder Thunder Cars started the night’s activities. They got off to a slow start with two cautions and a jumped start before finishing lap one. Once they did get going Billy “The Kid” Kennedy out-muscled Tom Crum for the early lead. D.J. Keefer ran second for most of the race until he dropped out with mechanical failure. Jeremy Ott was sent to the rear for jumping the start, made his way back to third on lap thirteen before he also slowed with mechanical woes. John Rasp and Denny Scofield worked through the field and up to second and third. But no one was able to challenge Kennedy for the win and the top five finishers were Kennedy, Rasp, Scofield, Andy Stouffer, and Crum. Scofield and Stouffer won the heat races.

Steve Whary had extra motivation to win the 270cc Micro Sprint feature. And when he got the pole position he made it count. Whary wired the field leading all twenty laps. Not even a red-flag period for a flip by Jason Houtz could slow him down. Tom Tice ran a strong second the entire race, but he never threatened the leader. At the finish it was Whary leading Tice, Tom Shearer, Ryan McAndrew, and Colby Dice. After the race Whary dedicated his win to Dave Sweigart’s son, Ricky, who is battling cancer. Heat race wins went to Jim Still and Levi Peck.

Brian Weitzel may have thought he was seeing double during the Legend feature. Weitzel started third and it took him until lap nine to take second from the number 53 car driven by Bill Diehl. Once he made that pass he looked ahead and saw another car with number 53, Buddy Sload. A few laps later he found himself passing the number 53 again, this time for the lead. Sload tried hard to regain the lead, several times pulling to the inside of Weitzel. But every time Weitzel used the momentum of the high groove to keep the lead. The top five finishers were Weitzel, Sload, Deihl, Greg Burd, and Scott Houdeshell. Heat race winners were Burd, Harlan Leppo, and Randy Kissinger.

The first half of the Sidewinder feature was an exciting side-by-side race of the front row starters, Jim Young and Craig Myers. With Young down low and Myers in the high groove the two wrestled for the lead for over ten laps. Just over halfway Myers started to slow and Young quickly drove away. As Myers started to fade Jesse Snyder began to charge, taking third on lap fourteen and second two laps later. But by then Young was leading by a full straightaway and he cruised home for the win. Snyder finished second, ahead of Brian Racine, Chad Hough, and Tim Mertz. Alex Schanz won his fourth heat race this year and Hough won the other heat.

The Mini Stock feature contained just about as much excitement that can be crammed into a twenty-lap non-stop main event. Dave Leidy and Ricky Harper shared front row starting spots and when the green dropped they both easily pulled away from the field. Leidy grabbed the lead with his favorite low groove while Harper stayed right behind running the high side. Harper slowly started to move around Leidy and he completed the pass on lap seven. The fast pace of the two leaders brought them quickly to the tail end of the field. They caught the first car on lap eleven, but when they did Harper had to lift off the throttle for just a moment to avoid contact. The two leaders went around either side of the slower car and Leidy emerged with the lead. The two remained bumper-to-bumper the remaining laps, with Leidy holding on for the win. Kevin Thomas had his five race-winning streak ended with his third place finish. Gary Newell and Mark Grove rounded out the top five. Thomas and Leidy were the heat winners.

There is an old saying in racing; you can’t win the race on the first lap. Those who saw the 600cc Micro Sprint feature may realize that sometimes you can. When the first two rows bobbled when the green light came on Jake Murphy went from sixth to first before lap one was completed. The top five remained the same from lap one until lap fourteen. Jimmy Brookens dropped to the back of the field on the start, but he regained his composure and started making his way back to the front. On lap fourteen he cracked the top five. A lap later he was fourth and with two laps to go he took third. But that was a far as he could go. At the checkers it was Murphy by a straightaway over Travis Saner, Brookens, Rodney Glass, and Tim Barrick. Heat race wins went to Glass and Brad Cox.

Path Valley Speedway returns to action May 15th with their four regular divisions along with the PASS 305 sprints and the Sidewinders. You can check out the schedule along with any other information you need to know about the track at www.pathvalley.com.
