07.05.08 | Keppler doubles up at Five Mile Point Speedway
Hoosier Tires 600 Modifieds rolled into Five Mile Point Speedway on July 5th. Twenty six cars and drivers were ready to suit up for the second consecutive night. This would be the first time for many of the drivers to take the green.

The first heat race field would be the toughest of the night. Nine cars out of the 26 would start this heat race with eight of them being in the top ten current point standings. Kevin Gruber #33 and Ryan Higgs#16 would start the fireworks. Mike Keppler #35k took the lead on lap 3 and never looked back. The second heat race would be lead by 2 rookies. Brad Szulewski #14z and the # 82 of Cody Coons. Coons must have liked the free air as he lead all eight laps. The third heat race would see a rookie and a veteran in the front row. Aaron Bowes # 64 rookie of the year contender and Erik (ROY) Whitby #12e would be on the outside. By turn four, Mike Pychinka #55 would lead the
field for all eight laps.

The flip of the coin would invert the top three of each heat. George Loux, second season driver of the # 48, and first year runner Ryan Suchon #37 would lead the field for the start of the 20 lap feature. Just like fireworks the 600 Modifieds started off with a bang. After the field settled into their groove, Mike Keppler #35k took the lead on lap nine. Loux and the # 16 of Ryan Higgs would do battle for the next ten lap since Mike Keppler had an unofficial 1.5 second lead. Brad Szulewski and Kevin Gruber put on a great show with Brad taking the fourth position. This would be his best finish of the 2008 season so far. Chris Ostrowski, regular modified driver at Five Mile, would steer the rental car to a sixth place finish. He contacted Doug Borger that morning to see if a ride was available. He stated after the race “I’m sure glad that I made the phone call, because that’s the most fun I’ve had in a race car.” Colin Dorshimer did double duty driving the # 4jrx. Rich Everitt ,owner, wanted to bring both cars out for the holiday weekend. Ryan Simmons climbed in the race car for the first time driving the # 84 of Ken Loux and crossed the checkered in 15th place.

Doug Borger, series owner, wanted to thank Five Mile Point Speedway for hosting the night’s racing events and the great fireworks display. The Hoosier Tires 600 Modified Series heads to PennCan Speedway July 11th, for more racing action.
