The handicapping system is pretty simple. They base it on your last 3 finishes. The cars with the best finishes for the last 3 weeks get handicapped. They start at the rear of the heats and depending how many cars and /or heats there are, they base it on that. The only reason you run a heat is to finish in the QUALIFIED spots, (usually top 4 qualify.) If there are 2 heats, that makes up 8 qualified spots for the feature.( 4 from the first heat and 4 from the second.) If you finish 5th or worse in a heat that is taking 4 cars, you dont qualify into the handicap. So basically. if you finish 5th in the first heat, with them taking 8 cars total for the main, you will start 9th. If you finish 5th in the second heat, you will start 10th.
From here, they will take the top 8 from the heats, look back at the last three weeks, and take the car with the worst finishes, and he will start on the pole. The car with the second worst finishes will start outside pole. If you miss a week from racing, that counts as a win! That way no one can "sandbag" and miss a week and start up front the following week.
It all is based on how many cars they have and how many heats. Also they will determine how many qualify for the top 8 spots, (or however many cars qualify). So you see all you are running a heat for is starting position. Unless they have a B main, everyone qualifies to race but unless you finish in a qualifying spot in the heat, you will start behind the qualified cars.
